You've carried a number. Maybe it was a meetings quota as a BDR, maybe a closed-won target as an AE, maybe a partnerships pipeline at a company that never called it sales. Now you want the next seat to be remote, and you type "remote business development jobs" into LinkedIn. It says 30,000+. Page one hands you a $60K business development representative seat at a SaaS company, a "Business Development Manager" at a staffing agency in Orlando, a $276,310 to $310,810 Director of Business Development, Payments at Roblox, and a TS/SCI-cleared satellite business development director in Chantilly, Virginia.
Those are not four levels of one job. They are four different jobs that happen to share a title, and the title tells you nothing about the three things that matter: whether your pay is base or on-target earnings, whether the seat is remote, and what you would actually do between 9 and 5. The salary aggregators you'd check next make it worse. For the identical search, "Business Development Manager, Remote," ZipRecruiter reports an average of $85,602 and Glassdoor reports $155,222. Both are right. They are averaging different jobs.

The seat most people land on from this search is the least remote one, and the seat that is actually remote comes with a travel budget. This guide sorts the title into its four seats, tells you which one is remote, what each one pays from the employer's own posted range, and which sentence in the body will tell you a "remote" BDR seat is really three days a week in Chicago. We analyzed 286 US business development job postings across 138 employer job boards on September 21, 2026.
Based on our analysis of 286 US business development postings across 138 employer boards (September 2026):
- 23% (n=66 of 286) are genuinely remote after reading the posting body or the ATS work-model flag; 42% (n=66 of 158) among postings that state any policy at all
- 39% (n=111 of 286) of "business development" postings are BDR, associate, or rep seats; 32% (n=36 of 111) of those carry a stated hybrid office requirement
- Remote share rises with seniority: BDR 34% (n=24 of 71 stating a policy), manager 43% (n=21 of 49), director 61% (n=14 of 23)
- Commission or OTE language appears in 52% (n=55 of 105) of BDR bodies and 9% (n=9 of 95) of manager bodies
- Staffing-agency business development: 0 of 25 remote; posted base $68K to $85K (n=24)
- Insurance and finance: 50% remote (n=17 of 34); CRO and biopharma 27% (n=10 of 37); defense and space 7% (n=1 of 15)
- 60% (n=171 of 286) publish a pay range; median posted base by tier: BDR $70K to $97K (n=34), manager $113K to $173K (n=49), director $120K to $240K (n=29), VP $133K to $244K (n=8)
- 21% (n=60 of 286) state a travel percentage; median 40%; 51 of the 60 are 25% or higher
- O*NET/BLS 2025: sales managers median $148,270, approx. 4,900 openings a year
The Four Seats Test
Every business development posting answers three questions if you read past the title: Who owns the close? Where does the pay sit, base or OTE? Where does the body sit, hub office, home office, or airport? The answers sort the posting into one of four seats. The seats have different pay, different remote odds, and almost nothing in common day to day.
The Four Seats Test: A three-question screen that sorts any "business development" posting into the job it actually is, before you read the requirements.
Seat 1: Pipeline (BDR / Associate / Rep). Posted OTE $85K to $107K (n=21); base $70K to $97K (n=34). You own meetings, not deals. The body says "pipeline," "outbound," "quota," and names the account executive path (39 of 105 BDR bodies do). Commission language in 52% of bodies. Remote in 24 of 111 postings, 34% among those that state a policy. Block fences it to 50 miles of an office in eight metros; Braze, Intercom, 6sense, and Pendo say three days.
Seat 2: Placement (staffing-agency business development). Posted base $68K to $85K (n=24). You sell contract placements. The product is a candidate. The body says Bullhorn, "ad calls," "skills marketing," and in-person networking. 0 of 25 remote. Vaco alone posted 23 of these across 13 cities.
Seat 3: Partnership (corporate business development at tech and consumer companies). Posted base $148K to $215K at consumer companies (n=9); $113K to $176K at B2B SaaS (n=26). You structure deals with platforms, payments partners, and channels. No quota in 89% of manager bodies; "partnership" appears in 50% of manager-and-above bodies; MBA language is common. It sits in New York or San Francisco: Notion $185K to $210K onsite, Twitch $162,700 to $220,200, Roblox director $276,310 to $310,810 on a Tuesday-to-Thursday schedule, Flex VP $336K to $420K hybrid. 1 of 14 consumer-company postings is remote.
Seat 4: Territory (field business development at insurers, CROs, health plans, and industrials). Posted base $102K to $173K at insurers (n=20); $111K to $250K at CROs (n=21). A region or segment is in the title: "West," "Southeast," "Private Client," "Biotech." The Workday flag says "Fully Remote" or "Virtual," and the body says 40 to 50% travel. Remote in 17 of 34 insurance postings and 10 of 37 CRO postings. Thermo Fisher 5 of 5, Fortrea 3 of 3, Nationwide 3 of 3, Centene 2 of 2.
Sub-seat: Capture (defense and federal). Clearance-gated, anchored to DC, Chantilly, or Long Beach. 1 of 15 remote. Rocket Lab posts the same director title at $171K to $257K in Littleton and $257K to $405K in Long Beach. Booz Allen's business development leads run $112,800 to $303,000.
How to use it: Read for the three answers before you read the requirements. If the pay is OTE and the path is "AE," it is Seat 1 no matter what the title says. If the pay is base and the operative word is "partnerships," it is Seat 3 and it has a hub. If there is a region in the title and a travel percentage in the body, it is Seat 4, and that is the remote one.
Here is the same test as a table, so you can hold it next to any posting.
| Seat | Tell in the posting | Posted pay | Remote share | Where the body sits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Pipeline (BDR) | "Representative," meetings, OTE, path to AE | $85K to $107K OTE (n=21) | 24 of 111 (34% of stated) | Hub office, 3 days common |
| 2 Placement (staffing) | Staffing-firm board, Bullhorn, "ad calls" | $68K to $85K base (n=24) | 0 of 25 | City office |
| 3 Partnership (tech/consumer) | "Partnerships," "Platform," base-only pay | $148K to $215K base consumer (n=9) | 1 of 14 consumer; 23 of 104 SaaS | NYC or SF HQ |
| 4 Territory (insurance/CRO/health/industrial) | Region or segment in title, travel % | $102K to $173K insurance; $111K to $250K CRO base | 17 of 34 insurance; 10 of 37 CRO | Home office plus airport |
| Capture (defense) | TS/SCI, "capture," "USCYBERCOM" | $108K to $142K to $405K by city | 1 of 15 | DC, Chantilly, Long Beach |
The seats split this way for a structural reason, not a cultural one. Seats 1 and 2 are activity jobs. Output is dials, sequences, and meetings booked, and activity is managed by sight, so it gets a floor and a hub. Seat 3 is a deal-structuring job that needs product, legal, and finance in the room, so it gets the headquarters. Seat 4 is a relationship job with a territory. It is managed by a number, and it is lived on airplanes, so the office is beside the point.
That leaves the real choice for anyone above the BDR rung, and it is a lifestyle choice, not a career one. Seat 3 is where you go to get paid more and give up remote: the hub postings top out at $260K to $420K and the consumer-company remote share is 1 of 14. Seat 4 is where you go to get the home office and give up the ceiling and your Tuesdays: posted base tops out around $173K to $250K until VP, and 51 of the 60 postings that state a travel figure say 25% or more. If a week with two nights in a hotel sounds fine and a week with three days at a desk in SoMa does not, Seat 4. If it is the reverse, Seat 3, and stop filtering for "remote."

How We Collected This Data
We did not survey anyone. We read the postings. On September 21, 2026 we ran two sweeps against the public, no-login job-board APIs that employers expose. The first queried 1,928 employer tokens against the Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, and SmartRecruiters job-board APIs, including roughly 150 tokens added for sectors that hire business development heavily: government contractors, consultancies, CROs, biopharma, agencies, logistics, and defense and space. 2,494 boards responded with 47,525 live postings, of which 444 titles contained "business development," "BDR," or "BDM." The second queried 121 validated Workday tenant and site pairs (insurers, health plans, pharma, CRO and device companies, banks, industrials, media, plus Booz Allen, Parsons, and Leidos) for "business development" and fetched every matching posting's full body, work-model flag, and pay range. That returned 224 titled postings.
We excluded interns, co-ops, and trainees; non-US locations (336 rows across Canada, the UK, EMEA, India, APAC, MENA, and LATAM); and titles that name a non-US market. After deduplicating by board, title, and description fingerprint, the dataset is 286 US postings across 138 employer boards: Greenhouse 123, Workday 104, Ashby 35, SmartRecruiters 15, Lever 9.
Work model was classified from the description body first and Workday's remoteType flag second (the flag was populated on 44 of 104 Workday rows). A posting is "remote" only if the body or the flag says so; "hybrid" requires a stated office-day requirement; "remote-radius" means remote with a commuting-distance rule. 128 postings state no policy at all, many of them large-company Workday requisitions that list a city and nothing else, so treat every remote share here as a floor. Pay figures are employer-posted ranges only (n=171). We cross-referenced with O*NET/BLS occupation data for sales managers and technical sales representatives, The Bridge Group's 2025 SDR research report, and the Payscale and Built In aggregator pages for business development manager.
What we couldn't see. Reddit was unreachable. Glassdoor, ZipRecruiter, and Salary.com figures are quoted only as search-snippet claims. The Workday sites for SAIC, ManTech, Peraton, Deloitte, Accenture, EY, KPMG, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, and Raytheon returned errors, so government-contractor and Big Four business development counts are a floor. Staffing firms on Bullhorn, iCIMS, and Paycom have no open endpoint, so Seat 2 is represented mostly by one large national agency. We update this analysis quarterly.
Which Business Development Jobs Actually Go Remote
The remote share is decided by sector and by seat, and it moves in a direction you will not see in most titles: up, as you get more senior.
| Sector | Postings | Remote | Share of all | Remote among stated | Hybrid | Employers in the set |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Insurance and finance | 34 | 17 | 50% | 17 of 31 (55%) | 14 | Marsh McLennan, Citi, Brown & Brown, Nationwide, Assurant, Centene, Cigna, State Street, Ascensus |
| Biopharma, CRO, device | 37 | 10 | 27% | 10 of 17 (59%) | 4 | IQVIA, Thermo Fisher, Fortrea, Abbott, Amgen, Bristol Myers Squibb, Dexcom, Philips |
| B2B SaaS and AI | 104 | 23 | 22% | 23 of 70 (33%) | 30 | Notion, Fivetran, Okta, Braze, Snowflake, Chainguard, Anthropic, Databricks, GitLab, Greenhouse |
| Fintech and crypto | 21 | 4 | 19% | 4 of 7 (57%) | 2 | Block, Plaid, Wise, BitGo, Coinbase, Robinhood, Brex, Ripple |
| Industrial and corporate | 14 | 2 | 14% | 2 of 7 (29%) | 2 | 3M, Baker Hughes, Caterpillar, PPG, T-Mobile, Warner Bros. Discovery |
| Consumer and marketplace | 14 | 1 | 7% | 1 of 7 (14%) | 6 | Twitch, Squarespace, Flex, Lyft, Toast, Roblox, Roku, HelloFresh |
| Defense and space | 15 | 1 | 7% | 1 of 4 (25%) | 3 | Rocket Lab, Relativity, Spire, Vast, SpaceX, Saronic, Shield AI |
| Staffing | 25 | 0 | 0% | 0 of 2 | 2 | Vaco, Supporting Strategies, Riveron |
| Seniority | Postings | Remote | Share of all | Stated a policy | Remote among stated | Hybrid |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BDR / Associate / Rep | 111 | 24 | 22% | 71 | 34% | 36 |
| Manager / Lead / Executive | 103 | 21 | 20% | 49 | 43% | 17 |
| Director | 45 | 14 | 31% | 23 | 61% | 7 |
| VP / Head | 13 | 5 | 38% | 9 | 56% | 3 |
Three things in those tables surprised us, and each has a cause.
Insurers and CROs are the remote business development employers. Thermo Fisher's five Business Development Executive postings are all flagged "Fully Remote," state-scoped, and posted at $102,200 to $153,350. Fortrea's three biotech business development directors are all remote, at $125K to $145K, $160K to $180K, and $215K to $240K. Nationwide's Specialty Care Territory Managers ($112K to $209K) and its Senior Director of Commercial Surety Underwriting and Business Development ($157K to $293K) are remote. Marsh McLennan splits its own title down the middle: the Private Client Insurance Business Development Executives are flagged remote at $93,100 to $173,400, while the Dallas and Miami Business Development Executives carry "a hybrid work arrangement, requiring a minimum of three days per week in the office." The customer in these seats is a broker, a biotech, or a dealer group spread across a region. The manager measures a number, not a desk.
Tech partnership business development is a hub job. Notion, Twitch, Squarespace, Harvey, Roblox, Ripple, and Flex all post their business development managers and directors in New York or San Francisco, and most say so in the body: Roblox "onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday," Brex "a minimum of three coordinated days in the office per week, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday," Flex "on-site expectations of 2-3 days per week." The exceptions are companies whose whole operating model is remote: Greenhouse's Senior Business Development Manager is "Anywhere in the United States" at $163,800 to $213,100, Coinbase's Senior Associate is $151,240 to $196,800 under a "remote-first, but not remote-only" policy with quarterly in-person "surges," and Dropbox posts a remote Strategic Partnerships manager. The deal in Seat 3 is structured with product, legal, and finance in the room, so it lives where they live.
Defense capture is a clearance-and-geography job. Booz Allen's six business development leads (AI, quantum, growth, cyber incident response) are all posted in McLean, Arlington, Washington, or Annapolis Junction, and all but two require a clearance. Rocket Lab's satellite and optical-systems directors are TS/SCI. Spire's Federal ISR business development manager "will require you to work a minimum of three days per week in the Washington, D.C." office. Of 15 defense and space postings, one is remote.
In business development, remote odds rise with seniority. The seat most people search for is the one most likely to require three days in an office.
The Three-Day Trap in BDR Postings
If you land on this search from an SDR or BDR seat, the postings you will see most are Seat 1, and Seat 1 has the most office mandates in the set. The mandate is almost never in the location field. It is in paragraph nine.
The radius pattern. Block posted eight "Business Development Rep Associate" requisitions across Atlanta, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Scottsdale, the Bay Area, DC, Seattle, and New York. Every body carries the same line: "Residence within 50 miles of the posted office location." The location field on its own reads like a distributed team. The sentence turns it into eight hub jobs.
The three-day pattern. Braze: "BDRs at Braze have a hybrid schedule, which means they will be in office a minimum of 3 days a week at either Chicago or Austin location." Intercom, at $83,400 to $110,725 OTE: "We expect employees to be in the office at least three days per week." 6sense: "Must be able to come into the office at least 3 days/week." Pendo: "In-office 3 days per week unless designated remote." Fivetran, at $77K to $107K OTE across Denver, Austin, and Oakland: "two-three days in the office each week." 1Password: "Austin office 3 days per week, with the flexibility to work from the office up to 5 days based on business needs." Of the 67 hybrid postings in the set, 17 state a day count, and 12 of those 17 say three.
The percentage pattern. Anthropic's BDR, posted at $116,480 to $131,040 OTE: "Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time."
The in-person pattern. Numeric, in New York and San Francisco: "We are an in-person company." Notion's BDR at $100K to $115K OTE is office-based in the same two cities.
The reason is the job's output. A BDR produces activity: dials, sequences, meetings set. Activity is managed by watching it happen. The Bridge Group's 2025 SDR research report, drawn from 351 B2B companies, puts average SDR tenure at 1.9 years and the share of reps at quota at 60%, which it calls the "lowest on record." Those are exactly the numbers that make a sales leader want the floor in view.
The remote BDR seats exist; they are just a minority and they cluster at remote-first companies. GitLab posts its BDR at $59K to $84K base for "Remote, North America." Talkspace posts two remote BDRs, one for consultant relations and one for military engagement, at $67K to $95K base. SecurityScorecard's public-sector BDR is $60K to $70K base, remote. Smartling's is $80K to $90K OTE. Quince's B2B BDR is $65K to $80K base with $90K to $115K OTE. Chainguard and BitGo each posted three remote BDRs. Geotab's "Business Development Representative (Remote)" at $160K to $200K OTE is a field role with 40% travel wearing a junior title, which is its own lesson about reading the body.
Open the posting and search the body for "miles," "days," "in-person," "office at least," and "% of the time." If any of them hits, the location field is describing the recruiting funnel, not the job. If none of them hits and the company is remote-first, the seat is probably real.
Once you have screened out the hub jobs, the remaining BDR postings are a short list, and a short list is where volume applying earns its keep.

What Remote Business Development Jobs Actually Pay
Pay in this title is set by the seat, not by whether the seat is remote. The aggregators disagree with each other because they are averaging seats.
| Tier | Base n | Median posted base | OTE n | Median posted OTE | Remote-only base n | Remote base | Hybrid base n | Hybrid base |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BDR / Associate | 34 | $70K to $97K | 21 | $85K to $107K | 8 | $66K to $90K | 9 | $60K to $101K |
| Manager / Lead | 49 | $113K to $173K | 5 | $160K to $260K | 9 | $102K to $173K | 7 | $101K to $148K |
| Director | 29 | $120K to $240K | 3 | $300K to $390K | 8 | $135K to $210K | 4 | $138K to $229K |
| VP / Head | 8 | $133K to $244K | 2 | $250K to $347K | 2 | $153K to $244K | 2 | $165K to $289K |
Salary ranges derive from our analysis of 286 US business development postings collected on September 21, 2026, using only ranges the employer printed in the posting (n=171), cross-referenced with O*NET/BLS occupation medians and the Payscale and Built In aggregator pages. Medians are of the posted range lows and highs, so a "$113K to $173K" row means half of manager postings start at or above $113K and half top out at or above $173K. Ranges move; check the linked sources for current figures.
The second thing the postings tell you is what kind of pay it is.
| Tier | Bodies read | Commission, OTE, or on-target language | "Quota" |
|---|---|---|---|
| BDR / Associate | 105 | 55 (52%) | 14 (13%) |
| Manager / Lead | 95 | 9 (9%) | 7 (7%) |
| Director | 43 | 9 (21%) | 5 (12%) |
| VP / Head | 13 | 2 (15%) | 1 (8%) |
Above the BDR, this is a base-salary title. The manager-and-above postings that do publish an OTE are almost all Seat 4 field roles: Assurant's remote Automotive Business Development Director at $300K to $400K OTE, McKesson's Field VP of Corporate Accounts at $164,700 to $274,500 OTE ("Work at Home - Ohio"), Geotab's mobility-data manager at $160K to $210K OTE, Headway's Care Partnerships lead at $146,520 to $199,000 OTE. Everyone else prints a base and, in 57% of bodies (n=154 of 270), mentions equity.
That is the whole aggregator argument. Payscale's business development manager page, updated July 11, 2026 from 3,528 self-reported profiles, shows an average base of $86,938 and a 10th-to-90th percentile band of $54K to $140K. That is a Seat 2 and small-business number; it sits almost exactly on Vaco's posted $68K to $85K. Built In's remote business development manager page shows an average base of $131,072 and total compensation of $184,414, which sits inside our all-employer manager median of $113K to $173K. Glassdoor's $155,222 and ZipRecruiter's $85,602 for the same remote title are the two ends of the same distribution, one weighted toward Seat 3 and one toward Seat 2. Above the BDR, business development is mostly a base-salary job. Commission language appears in 52% of BDR postings and 9% of manager postings, and the aggregators quoting $85K and $155K for the same remote title are describing different seats.
Here is what remote seats are actually posting, by name:
- Fortrea, Executive Director of Business Development, Biotech (Northeast), remote, 50% travel: $215K to $240K base
- Nationwide, Senior Director, Commercial Surety Underwriting and Business Development, "United States - Remote": $157K to $293K base
- Centene, Senior Director, LTSS Business Development, seven named states, 75% travel: $134,600 to $249,000 base
- Greenhouse, Senior Business Development Manager, "Anywhere in the United States": $163,800 to $213,100 base
- Citi, VP, Business Development Lead Officer, CitiMortgage, "Telecommuter California": $135,200 to $202,800 base
- Thermo Fisher, Business Development Executive (Remote), state-scoped: $102,200 to $153,350 base
- Marsh McLennan, Private Client Insurance Business Development Executive, remote: $93,100 to $173,400 base
- Smartsheet, Professional Services Business Development Director, remote, 40% travel: $112,500 to $152,500 base
And here is the ceiling you trade for the home office. The Seat 3 hub postings run higher: Roblox Director of Business Development, Payments $276,310 to $310,810 in San Mateo; Ripple Senior Director, Capital Markets $260K to $325K in New York; Squarespace Senior Director $210K to $368K in New York; Flex VP of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships $336K to $420K hybrid; Harvey Corporate Business Development Manager $200K to $260K; Notion Business Development Manager, Product and Platform $185K to $210K. IQVIA's 12 business development postings, all silent on work model and all carrying 30 to 50% travel, print the widest bands in the set, from $89,600 at Associate Director to $434,200 at VP.

For the outside benchmark: according to O*NET's 2025 occupation data for sales managers, sourced from BLS, the median wage is $148,270, employment is 619,500, growth is projected "faster than average (5% to 6%)" through 2034, and openings run about 4,900 a year. Technical and scientific sales representatives, the occupation closest to Seat 4, carry a $104,920 median with slower growth. Posted director and VP bands run above the sales-manager median because they are wide bands with senior tops, weighted toward tech and pharma employers that post the highest figures.
One practical note: 60% of these postings (n=171 of 286) print a range, and 56% of the remote ones do (n=37 of 66). Workday employers post one requisition across a dozen states and trip the Colorado, New York, California, and Washington disclosure laws, the same effect we measured in remote insurance hiring. You can benchmark a counter-offer from postings alone in this field.
Home Office Plus Airport: The Travel Clause
Seat 4 is the remote seat, and "remote" in Seat 4 means a home office and a travel budget. The posting tells you the number.
Sixty of the 286 postings state a travel percentage. The median is 40%, and 51 of the 60 are 25% or higher. Among the 14 remote director postings, 8 state a figure, and the median is 40%. Centene's remote LTSS Senior Director says 75%, with a location field that reads "Remote-MO, Remote-AZ" and five more states. Assurant's remote VP of Business Development, Financial Services says 60%; its Automotive Business Development Director says 50%. McKesson's Field VP says 50%. Thermo Fisher's Business Development Executive West says 50%. Smartsheet's PS director says 40%. SpaceX's Starlink business development manager, which is not remote, says "must be available to work extended hours and weekends as needed" and "willingness to travel approximately 50% of the time." Saronic's special-operations manager says 40 to 60%. Carta's Business Development Manager I says "at least 25% travel or more."
Then there is where you may live. Eight of the 66 remote postings scope remote to named states: Centene's seven, Thermo Fisher's "Remote, California," Citi's "Telecommuter California," McKesson's "Work at Home - Ohio," NVIDIA's federal physical-AI seat. Two more are remote with a radius: Lyra Health's Health Systems Business Development Manager is "fully remote with some customer travel (40%). Candidates must be physically located within commuting distance to Baltimore, MD." Dexcom goes the other way and says so: "Your location will be a home office; you are not required to live within commuting distance of your assigned Dexcom site (typically 75 miles/120km)."
There is also the question of how long "remote" stays remote, and the postings answer that too if you read the perks. Coinbase's remote Senior Associate seat is "remote-first, but not remote-only," with quarterly in-person "surges." Geotab tags its mobility-data manager #LI-Remote and then says you are "welcomed and encouraged to come into our beautiful, safe, clean offices as often as you like," which is the sentence a hybrid mandate is written in a year before it is written. Brex offers "up to four weeks per year of fully remote work" as a perk on a three-day-a-week director job, which tells you what the other 48 weeks are. Pendo's BDR is "in-office 3 days per week unless designated remote," and the designation is the manager's to revoke. Marsh McLennan posts the same Business Development Executive title as remote for private-client seats and three days in Dallas for the rest, so the policy is per team, not per company. None of these are lies. They are the terms, and they are the reason to ask the interview question in the next section about where last year's team actually sat.
And the flag can contradict the location. Parsons' Senior Director of Business Development for NSA and USCYBERCOM lists "US - VA, Herndon" and "US - Remote" in the location field. Workday's own work-model flag on the same requisition says "Hybrid," and the body adds 30% travel. When the flag and the location disagree, the flag was set by the business unit and the location by the recruiter. Trust the flag.
The Seat 4 decision rule, five lines:
- If the title has a region in it, read the travel percentage as nights away per month, not as a perk.
- If the location field lists states, you must live in one of them. It is not a preference.
- If the location says remote and the flag or the body says hybrid, the flag wins.
- If the body says "commuting distance," it is remote-radius. Score it as a hub job with a longer leash.
- If there is no travel number and no region, you are probably reading a Seat 3 posting, and it has a hub.
"Business development" is four jobs. Two of them are sales, one is corporate development, and only one is reliably remote: the one with a territory in the title and 40% travel in the body.

Moving Between Seats
The fastest route to a remote business development seat is a lateral move into Seat 4, and every move between seats has a price the postings will quote you.
BDR to AE, or BDR to partnerships. The AE path is the default; 39 of 105 BDR bodies name it. If that is the route, the remote account executive guide covers what the next rung posts and pays, and the SDR, BDR, and AE explainer covers the titles. The partnerships path into Seat 3 needs a deal you can describe, not a quota you hit, and it lands in a hub office at a higher base. It is a promotion in pay and a demotion in remote odds.
AE or account manager to territory business development. Insurers (Nationwide, Marsh McLennan, Assurant, Centene, Cigna) and CROs (Thermo Fisher, Fortrea, IQVIA) hire closers who already have a book in the region. This is the move that gets you the home office. The price is 40 to 50% travel and a base that tops out around $173K to $250K until you reach VP, versus Seat 3 directors printing $260K to $368K in a hub. If you are coming from remote account manager roles or remote customer success, the relationship evidence transfers; the new-logo evidence has to be built.
Partnerships to corporate development. "P&L" appears in 6 of 151 manager-and-above bodies and "proposal" in 42. The corporate development ladder is base plus equity and hub-anchored. It is the highest ceiling in the title and the least remote.
Into capture. Booz Allen and Rocket Lab want the clearance first; 13 of 270 bodies require one. Without it, the entry points are commercial or federal-civilian seats at Parsons, Spire, or Leidos, and almost none of them are remote. If you have never sold into government, breaking into remote sales is the wrong guide and a capture-management certification is the right first step.
One interview question per seat, because each one exposes the thing the posting hid:
- Seat 1: "What share of last quarter's BDRs hit quota, and how many were promoted?"
- Seat 3: "Which three deals did this team close last year, and who was in the room?"
- Seat 4: "How many nights away did the person in this seat log last year?"
Two search habits that find Seat 4 faster than the aggregators do. On any Greenhouse, Lever, or Workday board, search the title for "Business Development Executive" or "Business Development Director" plus a region word ("West," "Southeast," "Northeast," "Mid-Atlantic"); the region is the tell, and it is in the title, not the filters. And on the boards that show a work-model flag (Workday's "Fully Remote," "Virtual," "Work at Home"), filter on the flag, not the location field, because the flag is set by the hiring team and survived the classification here 44 times out of 44.
If you are running a search across business development manager openings and business development representative openings at the same time, you are applying to two different jobs with one resume, and that is usually why you're not getting interviews. Pick the seat, then let auto-apply run the volume against the sales and business development roles that match it.
Frequently Asked Questions
I'm a BDR with two years of experience. Is a "Business Development Manager" title a promotion, and will it be remote?
It depends on which seat the manager title sits in. A manager posting at a tech or consumer company with "partnerships" or "platform" in it is Seat 3: a real step up in pay (posted base $113K to $176K at SaaS companies, n=26; $148K to $215K at consumer companies, n=9) but usually a hub-office job in New York or San Francisco. A manager posting at a staffing firm is Seat 2, and its posted base ($68K to $85K, n=24) may be below your current OTE. Among postings that state a policy, 43% of manager seats are remote (n=21 of 49) versus 34% of BDR seats (n=24 of 71), so the odds improve, but the seat decides more than the title does.
Is business development a sales job? Do business development managers carry a quota?
At the BDR level, yes: 52% of BDR bodies (n=55 of 105) mention commission or OTE, and the job is measured in meetings. Above that, mostly no. Commission or OTE language appears in 9% of manager bodies (n=9 of 95) and the word "quota" in 11% of manager-and-above bodies (n=17 of 151), while "partnership" appears in 50%. The exceptions are Seat 4 field roles at insurers, CROs, and industrials, which post OTE and travel percentages like a sales job because they are one.
Why does Glassdoor say remote business development managers make $155K and ZipRecruiter says $85K?
Because they are averaging different jobs under one title. Payscale's $86,938 average base (3,528 profiles, July 2026) sits on top of the staffing-agency seat, where Vaco posted 23 business development managers at $68K to $85K base. Built In's remote figure of $131,072 base and $184,414 total sits inside our all-employer manager median of $113K to $173K (n=49), which is dominated by tech, insurance, and CRO employers. Glassdoor's $155,222 and ZipRecruiter's $85,602 are the two ends of that same distribution.
How do I score a posting on the Four Seats Test?
Answer three questions from the body, not the title. Who owns the close: if the posting names a meetings quota and a path to AE, it is Seat 1; if it names placements or Bullhorn, Seat 2; if it names partnerships and platforms, Seat 3; if it names a region and a travel percentage, Seat 4. Where the pay sits: OTE points to Seat 1 or a Seat 4 field role; base-only with equity points to Seat 3. Where the body sits: a radius or day-count sentence means a hub; a state-scoped location with a travel figure means a home office. Seat 4 is the one with remote odds above 50% at insurers (n=17 of 34).
Which industries actually hire remote business development managers?
Insurance and finance lead with 50% remote (n=17 of 34; Thermo Fisher is the CRO equivalent at 5 of 5), followed by CRO and biopharma at 27% (n=10 of 37) and B2B SaaS at 22% (n=23 of 104). Consumer and marketplace companies (1 of 14), defense and space (1 of 15), and staffing (0 of 25) rarely post remote business development seats. Within SaaS, the remote postings cluster at remote-first companies such as GitLab, Greenhouse, Coinbase, Chainguard, and Dropbox.
How much travel does a remote business development director really do?
Of the 14 remote director postings in the set, 8 state a travel figure and the median is 40%. Centene's remote LTSS Senior Director says 75%, Fortrea's Executive Director says 50%, Assurant's Automotive Director says 50%, and Smartsheet's Professional Services Director says 40%. Across all 286 postings, 60 state a percentage, the median is 40%, and 51 of the 60 are at 25% or higher. Read "remote" in a director title as "home office plus airport."
Can I get into defense or government business development without a clearance, and is any of it remote?
Rarely on both counts. Thirteen of the 270 postings with body text require a clearance, and the defense and space postings concentrate at Booz Allen (six seats in McLean, Arlington, Washington, and Annapolis Junction) and Rocket Lab (TS/SCI directors in Littleton, Chantilly, and Long Beach). One of 15 defense and space postings is remote, and Parsons' NSA and USCYBERCOM senior director lists "US - Remote" in the location while Workday's flag says hybrid. The uncleared entry points are commercial or federal-civilian seats, and they are hub jobs.
Start Your Remote Business Development Job Search
Name your seat before you search. If you want the home office, target Seat 4: the insurers, CROs, health plans, and industrials that post regions in the title and travel in the body, or the handful of remote-first tech companies that post Seat 3 without a hub. Read every posting for the three answers, search the body for "miles," "days," and "% of the time," and when the location and the flag disagree, believe the flag. Then run the volume where it counts: remote roles above $100K for manager seats, roles paying over $150K for director seats, and Salesforce-skilled roles if that is the stack your last book lived in. The remote sales jobs guide covers the rest of the revenue org.
The title says business development. The posting says which of four jobs it is. Only one of them trades a hub office for a home office, and it hands you a travel budget with the keys.
