You've run HR for a 700-person operation. You've settled a grievance before second shift started, sat in on a workers' comp claim that turned into a lawsuit, and rewritten the handbook twice. So you search "remote HR director jobs." When we checked, Google's second result was a LinkedIn page titled "1000+ Remote Hr Jobs in Wichita, Kansas Metropolitan Area."
Then you open real postings. A Sheraton in Pomona, California posts its Director of Human Resources at $126,000 to $160,000 with a form field that reads "Located Remotely? N". Praxis Health, hiring an HR director in Pendleton, Oregon, puts it more bluntly: "This isn't a remote-eligible desk job you can do from a high-rise." A few weeks later, Homebase posted its Director of Human Resources and Culture as "Fully remote in USA with negligible travel" at $140,000 to $155,000.

Same title. Same seniority. The difference isn't the company's culture or how modern its HR team is. It's where the employees work. An HR director goes where the workforce clocks in, and the posting tells you where that is before anyone mentions remote work.
We analyzed 1,272 US HR director job postings across 1,148 employers, listed between May and October 2026. This guide shows how many are really remote, why most aren't, what the remote ones pay, and a four-check test you can run on any posting in about a minute.
Remote HR director jobs are rare. Of the 411 HR director postings we found with plain searches that state a work model, 14 are fully remote (3.4%) and 185 are hybrid. Adding searches with "remote" in the query lifts the count to 56 of 466 (12.0%). Postings that read like a desk seat on The Floor Test (3-4 checks) were remote 33 of 144 times (22.9%); floor seats (0-1 checks) were remote 5 of 115 times (4.3%). Remote seats don't pay less: a posted median of $170,000 against $145,000 on-site.
Here are the numbers behind that answer, all from the same postings.
Based on 1,272 US HR director postings at 1,148 employers (May-October 2026):
- 3.4% (n=14 of 411) of plain-search postings that state a work model are fully remote; 185 are hybrid, 207 are on-site or tied to a named office
- 12.0% (n=56 of 466) are remote once searches with "remote" in the query are added; 806 of 1,272 never state a work model
- 4.3% vs 22.9%: remote share at Floor Test 0-1 (n=5 of 115) vs 3-4 (n=33 of 144)
- 2.4% (n=1 of 41) of postings that name labor relations are remote; 0 of 29 that mention bilingual or Spanish skills are
- $160,000 posted median (n=740); remote $170,000 (n=39) vs on-site $145,000 (n=107)
- 24.7% (n=18 of 73) of "People"-titled postings are remote vs 6.4% (n=18 of 280) of "Human Resources" or "HR" titles
- 19.8% (n=22 of 111) of specialist HR director postings (HRIS, talent acquisition, total rewards) found by plain search are remote
How We Collected This Data
Start with what we can't see. Indeed, Glassdoor and ZipRecruiter block our fetcher, and Reddit blocks automated reading, so none of their listings or threads are counted here. Retained HR director searches that never become a public posting aren't here either, and some senior HR seats are filled that way.
What we did read: 1,288 unique US requisitions with a generalist HR director title, deduplicated from 1,498 copies. They came from LinkedIn's public job search (59 keyword queries, 2,871 unique cards, 1,064 full job descriptions read), the SimplyHired and Indeed network (32 searches, 486 job pages), 739 company career sites on Workday, 1,138 live Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and SmartRecruiters boards, and Idealist. Sixteen appeared only on Himalayas, a board that lists nothing but remote jobs, so we left those out of every share. That leaves the 1,272 postings used throughout this guide.
We merged copies on employer and title, then merged the same requisition when it showed up under several wordings. One company posted the same description as Director of People, Head of HR, Director of HR and Head of People. A search firm reposted another employer's opening word for word.
In: HR Director, Director of Human Resources, Director of People or People Operations, People and Culture Director, Head of People or HR, HRBP Director, and senior and regional HR director titles. Out, and kept as a comparison set of 261: talent acquisition, total rewards, HRIS, learning, employee relations, DEI and HR operations directors, plus associate directors. Also out: human-services and workforce-development titles, AI-training gigs, non-US postings and listings dated before May 2026.
Work model comes from the posting text and structured fields. Because a search for "remote HR director" finds remote postings by design, we report the remote share two ways: plain-search finds (14 of 411) and all finds (56 of 466). We hand-read every remote label that lacked a clear sentence about the seat itself (18 rows, 11 changed) and two random samples of remote rows, which caught things like Marriott's "Located Remotely? N" field and a stadium caterer's PTO-policy link that says "performed Remotely."
Pay: 740 postings with a posted range, read at the midpoint, with 26 hourly ranges annualized. Cross-reference: the Bureau of Labor Statistics median for HR managers, $149,280 in May 2025. Data reflects October 2026, and we refresh it quarterly.
Why HR Directors Follow the Workforce
HR at a site employer is a contact sport. Terminations happen in a room. Investigations mean interviewing a forklift driver between shifts. A grievance meeting under a union contract has a steward in it, and a serious injury can mean an HR visit to the hospital that afternoon. The people on the other side of those conversations can't log in from home, so the employer writes presence into the job.
You can see it in the wording. A manufacturing client of Chesapeake Search Partners wants an HR director with a "visible presence throughout the manufacturing facility" at $145,000 to $160,000. Short Story's HR director posting, at $180,000 to $210,000, asks the director to "walk the floor, helping supervisors enforce rigorous standards." MML Hospitality's posting for its Aspen property says "Act as a consistent, accessible HR presence on property."
When the workforce is already spread across states and laptops, the job changes shape. It becomes multi-state compliance, HR systems, manager coaching on video and policy that has to work in 30 states at once. There's no floor to walk, so the seat can sit anywhere. Even the BLS description of the occupation starts from the office: "Human resources managers work in offices."
The sector split shows how hard that line is:
| Sector | Postings | Remote (of those stating a model) | Posted median pay (n) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing | 117 | 1 of 44 (2.3%) | about $193K (49) |
| Hotels, restaurants, casinos | 94 | 0 of 16 | about $140K (57) |
| Schools and universities | 64 | 0 of 11 | about $138K (26) |
| Government | 44 | 0 of 7 | about $125K (20) |
| Health care providers and senior care | 197 | 8 of 44 (18.2%) | about $135K (97) |
| Nonprofits | 85 | 6 of 37 (16.2%) | about $120K (59) |
| Tech and software | 139 | 14 of 74 (18.9%) | about $214K (92) |
| Professional services | 114 | 9 of 47 (19.1%) | about $165K (70) |
Across the site-workforce sectors combined (health care, manufacturing, hospitality, education, government, retail, logistics and construction), 15 of 164 stating postings were remote (9.1%). The eight remote health care seats aren't running a hospital's HR. They're regional or corporate roles that travel to sites, like Select Medical's regional HR director, posted as "Remote Position - 50% - 70% Travel Required," or HR seats at care-delivery companies like Cityblock Health.
An HR director goes where the workforce clocks in. If the employees can't work from home, neither can the person who handles their grievances.
The Floor Test: Is This HR Director Seat a Desk Seat?
The Floor Test is a four-check read of an HR director posting that tells you whether the workforce you'd serve clocks in at a site (a floor seat) or works spread out (a desk seat). Give one point for each check the posting passes.
- No union line. The posting doesn't mention labor relations, collective bargaining, grievances or a "union environment." Pass: remote 52 of 398 (13.1%). Fail: 4 of 68 (5.9%). 291 postings fail this check.
- No floor line. No OSHA, workers' comp, safety committee or safety program, "visible presence," frontline or hourly workforce, or shift language. Pass: 47 of 350 (13.4%). Fail: 9 of 116 (7.8%).
- A distributed-workforce line. The posting names a multi-state workforce, a remote-first company, or employees across a number of states or countries. Yes: 22 of 96 (22.9%). No: 34 of 370 (9.2%).
- "People" or "Head of" in the title. Director of People, People and Culture, People Operations, Head of People or Head of HR. Yes: 31 of 134 (23.1%). No: 25 of 332 (7.5%).
Here's the rubric:
The Floor Test: one point per check passed (no union line, no floor line, a distributed-workforce line, People or Head of in the title)
- Floor seat (0-1 points), about $136K posted median (n=232): union, safety or frontline language; the workforce is named as a plant, hospital, property, campus or store; the posting asks for presence. Remote 5 of 115 (4.3%). Hotel brands, hospitals, plants and school districts live here.
- Mixed seat (2 points), about $160K (n=320): an HQ seat at a multi-site employer, often with travel to sites. Remote 18 of 207 (8.7%). Expect hybrid, and expect to be asked how often you'll visit locations.
- Desk seat (3-4 points), about $188K (n=188): no union or floor language, a workforce spread across states or countries, and a People title. Remote 33 of 144 (22.9%). Tech, professional services and distributed nonprofits make up most of these.
How to use it: score a posting before you write a cover letter. At 0-1, apply only if you'd take the site job. At 3-4, apply, and ask in the first call where the employees you'd support actually sit.
By single score, the step-up is steady: 1 of 18 remote at 0 points, 4 of 97 at 1, 18 of 207 at 2, 20 of 109 at 3 and 13 of 35 (37.1%) at 4.
We picked these checks by reading this same set of postings, so treat the bands as a read of this market, not a law. They do hold up where they should. Among plain-search finds alone, the three bands run 0 of 108, 4 of 187 (2.1%) and 10 of 116 (8.6%). Outside tech they run 4.5%, 7.4% and 22.9%. On employer career sites and SimplyHired, with LinkedIn left out, they run 0%, 9.6% and 28.6%.
| Check | Remote when the posting passes | Remote when it fails |
|---|---|---|
| No union line | 52 of 398 (13.1%) | 4 of 68 (5.9%) |
| No floor line | 47 of 350 (13.4%) | 9 of 116 (7.8%) |
| Distributed-workforce line | 22 of 96 (22.9%) | 34 of 370 (9.2%) |
| People or Head of title | 31 of 134 (23.1%) | 25 of 332 (7.5%) |
Even a desk seat is remote less than a quarter of the time. That's a numbers problem, and it's where applying at volume pays off.

Remote, Hybrid or "Based in Our Office": What the Postings Actually Offer
If you've been holding out for fully remote, look at what the flexible postings really offer. Among plain-search finds that state a work model, hybrid outnumbers remote 185 to 14. Where a hybrid posting names a schedule, it's usually three days a week in the office (34 postings) or four (17).
Hybrid HR director postings tend to spell out the schedule. Menlo Church's Director of People Ops is "In person Monday through Thursday at our Central offices in Menlo Park, CA w/ optional WFH Friday." Spano Pratt's search for Meta House in Milwaukee, at $115,000 to $140,000, says "The position requires visibility and a presence to support onsite staff and regional office locations." Some don't leave room for doubt. Howmet Aerospace's Brea, California HR director posting, at $200,000 to $250,000, says "Remote work not considered." Pylon's Head of People & Operations listing in San Francisco puts "You want remote or hybrid" under "This Role Might NOT Be For You If."
Most postings say nothing: 806 of 1,272 never state a work model. A silent posting from a hotel, hospital, plant or school district is an on-site posting. You'll find out in the first call, and it won't be the answer you wanted.
When a hospital group, senior living operator or manufacturer does post a remote HR director, it's usually a travel job. Select Medical's regional role says "Remote Position - 50% - 70% Travel Required." Solera Senior Living's people-strategy director, at $150,000 to $185,000, says "While the role is remote, heavy travel to Solera communities nationwide is an essential part of the position." Watts Water's North American HR director, at $160,000 to $180,000, lists "Approximately 30% travel to manufacturing and distribution facilities and other business locations." Sixteen of the 56 remote postings carry a travel line.
That's not a reason to skip them. A remote seat with 30% travel can beat a five-day commute. Just count the hotel nights before you count the commute you're saving.
What Remote HR Director Jobs Pay
These figures are midpoints of posted ranges from the 740 postings that published one, May to October 2026, checked against the BLS figures for HR managers. Ranges vary by employer type more than by work model, so read the sector rows before you read the remote row.
| Work model | Postings with pay | Posted median | Middle half |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remote | 39 | about $170K | $150K-$205K |
| Hybrid | 139 | about $183K | $145K-$223K |
| On-site | 107 | about $145K | $105K-$180K |
| All postings | 740 | about $160K | $125K-$198K |
Remote pays more than on-site here because of who posts remote seats, not because remote work earns a premium. Tech employers post a $214,000 median and life sciences $235,000, against $135,000 in health care providers, $125,000 in government and $120,000 at nonprofits. Hold the employer type steady and the gap narrows but doesn't flip. Outside tech, remote seats post about $168,000 (n=29) against about $152,000 for on-site and office-based seats (n=125). Among titles that say "Human Resources" or "HR," it's about $168,000 (n=14) against $147,000 (n=112). The one place on-site pays more is People-titled seats: $212,500 on-site (n=28) against $170,500 remote (n=25), on small samples.
According to the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, HR managers earned a median $149,280 in May 2025, with the top tenth above $267,810. BLS industry medians show the same split as our postings: $170,590 in professional, scientific and technical services against $126,900 in health care and social assistance. Our posted median of $160,000 sits above the BLS figure, which makes sense: directors are the top of that occupation, and BLS counts every HR manager below them too.
Title wording moves pay too. "HR Director" and "Director of Human Resources" postings sit at about $145,000 (n=483). "Director of People" titles post about $170,000 (n=115), "Head of People" or "Head of HR" about $205,000 (n=38), and HRBP Director titles about $213,000 (n=104). An HRBP director usually supports one division's leaders inside a large company, which is why that seat pays like a senior director.
If you're comparing offers across these bands, our list of remote jobs paying $150K or more and the high-paying remote jobs guide show where HR director pay sits against other senior roles.
Remote HR directors don't take a pay cut. They work for companies that already pay more.

The pay story and the remote story point the same way. If you're aiming for a desk seat, you're also aiming at the employers that post the higher ranges.

"People" vs "Human Resources": What the Title Tells You
The title is the fastest Floor Test check, and the gap is wide:
| Title wording | Postings | Remote (of those stating a model) | Posted median |
|---|---|---|---|
| HR Director, Director of Human Resources | 899 | 18 of 280 (6.4%) | about $145K |
| Director of People, People and Culture | 159 | 18 of 73 (24.7%) | about $170K |
| Head of People, Head of HR | 64 | 8 of 35 (22.9%) | about $205K |
| HRBP Director | 150 | 12 of 78 (15.4%) | about $213K |
The word doesn't make a seat remote. "People" is what venture-backed and distributed companies call the function, so the title stands in for the workforce behind it. That's why it's only one of four checks. Pylon titles its seat Head of People & Operations and still wants "a high-bar, in-person culture in SF, not a remote-first People function."
For your search, it means two things. First, search the People titles as well as the HR ones. Ahrefs shows almost no search volume for "remote head of people jobs" or "director of people operations remote," so fewer job seekers are typing them. Second, if your resume says "Human Resources" everywhere, the People-titled employers may read you as a site HR leader. Use their vocabulary for the work you've done: people operations, employee experience, multi-state programs.
The word "People" in the title predicts remote better than any credential: 18 of 73 People-titled postings were remote, against 18 of 280 titled Human Resources or HR.
Who Has Posted Remote HR Director Roles
No single employer dominates. No company posted more than one remote HR director requisition in our window once duplicates were merged, so set alerts on titles rather than watching a company list. These employers posted HR director-level seats as remote between May and October 2026:
Tech and software: Figma (People Partners director, "remote within the US with frequent travel to San Francisco," $235,000 to $317,000), LaunchDarkly ($191,800 to $263,670), Lumen Technologies ($152,066 to $202,755), ServiceNow, Pindrop, Seismic.
Professional services, data and finance: Circana ($119,000 to $190,000), CBRE, Launch Potato ("a remote-first team across 18 countries," $170,000 to $190,000), Symetra ("As a remote-first organization with a cameras-on culture," $155,800 to $259,600), Imprint ($250,000 to $300,000).
Health and care companies, usually with travel: Select Medical, Solera Senior Living, Cityblock Health ($165,000 to $175,000), Marathon Health ($130,000 to $170,000), Owens & Minor ($160,000 to $175,000).
Industrial employers, with site travel: Watts Water Technologies, Kohler Co. ($152,600 to $239,800).
Nonprofits: Homebase ($140,000 to $155,000), Accelerate Change ($95,000 to $145,000), InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.
Two cautions. Staffing firms and reposting boards post for clients they don't name, so a "remote" label there can change once you learn the client. And postings close fast: a list of who posted is a list of who hires this way, not of what's open today. For the wider set of HR roles at these companies, our remote HR jobs guide covers the field below director, and the HR and recruiting job board shows recent openings.
Moves That Raise Your Remote Odds
Where you start decides which move makes sense.
If you run HR for a plant, hospital, hotel group or school system now: your fastest route to remote is usually a regional or corporate seat that travels to sites, like the Select Medical, Solera and Watts Water roles above. Expect 30% to 70% travel. Manufacturing posted 1 remote seat of 44 that stated a model, so a straight move to a remote plant-side seat is a long wait.
If you want fully remote soon: aim at Floor Test 3-4 postings. Tech and professional services account for 101 of the 279 desk-seat postings. Your resume should lead with the work those employers need: multi-state compliance (125 postings name it; 12 of the 71 stating a model were remote), distributed teams, and the HR systems they name. Workday appears in 108 postings, ADP in 65, Paylocity in 28, UKG in 26, Paycom in 25 and Rippling in 22.
If you're open to a specialist seat: specialist HR directors went remote far more often. Among plain-search finds, 22 of 111 (19.8%) were remote, against 14 of 411 (3.4%) generalists. HRIS and people-systems directors were remote 8 of 11 times, talent acquisition 5 of 22, total rewards 6 of 34. The samples are small, but the direction matches what we found for people operations roles, where comp and systems seats carry most of the remote openings. Pay and comp specialists can compare notes in our compensation analyst guide and benefits specialist guide. Recruiting leaders should start with remote recruiter jobs and the talent acquisition job board.
If remote isn't a hard rule: take hybrid seriously. It's 185 postings to remote's 14 in plain-search finds, and a two- or three-day week at a desk-seat employer often comes with the higher pay band.
Treating "remote" in a staffing firm's listing as final before you know the client. Leading the resume with union avoidance and OSHA programs when you're applying to a software company. Skipping People-titled postings because the title sounds junior to you. And applying to silent postings at site employers expecting a remote conversation: 806 of 1,272 postings never state a work model, and at a hotel or hospital that silence means on-site.
About certifications: 547 postings name SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or SPHR, and those postings were remote 19 of 185 times (10.3%), with a posted median of $145,000 against $170,250 for postings that don't name one. Read that as a signal about the employer, not a reason to skip the credential. Half of floor-seat postings (211 of 414) name a certification, against about a third of desk-seat postings (90 of 279). Only 31 postings require one outright.
Our read, and it's an opinion backed by those counts: you can't run HR remotely for people who can't work remotely. Pick the workforce before you pick the company. The skills that make you strong at a site employer (labor relations, safety programs, bilingual frontline work) are the same lines that mark a seat as on-site: labor relations postings were remote 1 of 41 times, bilingual or Spanish 0 of 29. If you're aiming at desk seats, put multi-state, distributed-team and systems work first on your resume and keep the union and safety work as a supporting line.
Even among desk-seat postings, fewer than one in four is remote. That math favors applying to every qualifying posting, not just the three that look perfect.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are there actually remote HR director jobs, or is everything hybrid?
There are some, but hybrid is far more common. Of the 411 HR director postings we found with plain searches that state a work model (May-October 2026), 14 were fully remote (3.4%) and 185 were hybrid. Even after adding remote-keyword searches, it's 56 of 466 (12.0%).
I'm an HR director at a manufacturing plant. Can I move into a remote role?
Yes, but rarely straight across: manufacturing posted 1 remote HR director seat of 44 that stated a work model. The realistic routes are a regional or corporate HR seat that travels to plants (Watts Water posted one remote with about 30% travel), a desk-seat employer in tech or professional services, or a specialist seat like HRIS or total rewards. Lead with your multi-site and systems work when you apply.
How do I tell if an HR director posting is really remote before I apply?
Run The Floor Test: one point each for no union line, no floor or safety line, a distributed-workforce line, and "People" or "Head of" in the title. Postings scoring 3-4 were remote 33 of 144 times (22.9%), and 0-1 were remote 5 of 115 times (4.3%). Also read form fields: Marriott brands print "Located Remotely? N" right in the posting.
What does a Floor Test score of 2 mean?
It's a mixed seat, usually an HQ role at a multi-site employer. Mixed postings were remote 18 of 207 times (8.7%) at a posted median of about $160,000. Expect hybrid and site travel, and ask in the first call how many days a week you'd be at a location.
Do remote HR directors make less than on-site HR directors?
No. Remote HR director postings had a median of $170,000 (n=39) against $145,000 for on-site ones (n=107), May-October 2026. Part of that is who posts remote seats, but outside tech the gap holds: about $168,000 remote against $152,000 on-site.
Is an HR director higher than an HR manager?
Usually, yes. The director owns the HR function for a company or a business unit, while a manager runs part of it. BLS counts both in one occupation, human resources managers (O*NET 11-3121), with a $149,280 median in May 2025. HR director postings in our data asked for a median of 8 years of experience (n=833), and 326 asked for 10 or more.
Do I need SHRM-SCP or SPHR to get a remote HR director job?
Not usually. 547 of 1,272 postings name a SHRM or HRCI certification, but only 31 require one, and postings that name one were remote 19 of 185 times (10.3%). Site employers ask most: half of floor-seat postings (211 of 414) name a credential such as the SHRM-SCP, against about a third of desk-seat postings (90 of 279). For desk seats, multi-state compliance and HR systems experience show up more often.
Start Your Remote HR Director Search
Score every posting with The Floor Test before you apply. Search the People titles alongside the HR ones. Treat a travel line as the price of remote at a site employer, not a trick.
Then cover the volume. Even desk seats go remote less than one time in four. Auto-Apply sends tailored applications to qualifying HR director postings while you're still running the job you have. Browse the HR and recruiting board for recent openings, check roles paying $100K and up, see where an HR generalist background fits, and read the remote HR jobs guide if you're weighing a step sideways.
An HR director goes where the people are. A remote HR director is just one whose people are everywhere.
