You've sold a campaign idea in a Tuesday review, art-directed a two-day shoot, and rebuilt a resize matrix at 11 PM because the media plan changed again. None of that needs a desk in Manhattan. So you search "remote art director jobs," and the first screen puts an Omnicom Health Art Director at $60,000 to $80,000, asking for one year of experience, next to a remote Art Director at Upstart posted at $138,600 to $192,000.
Same title. That's the part the job boards hide: "Art Director" stopped working as a rung a while ago. What sets the price is who signs the check for your work, an agency billing a client or a company selling its own product, and what the posting says you'll own. The remote seats, meanwhile, bunch up in the corner of the market that pays least.

We analyzed 428 US art director job postings across 351 employers; 363 of the 426 dated ones were listed between August and October 2026. This guide shows where the 46 fully remote seats are, what each kind of employer pays for the same title, the small print on the remote listings, and a six-check score that predicts a posting's pay before you read the range.
Yes, art directors work remotely, but less often than the boards suggest: 46 of the 243 postings that state a work model (18.9%) are fully remote, and 19 of those 46 are freelance or contract. Pay follows the employer, not the title. An Art Director posts $159K at a tech company and $81K at an independent agency. Remote seats that pay $120K or more are rare: 3 of the 16 salaried remote postings with a range.
Here's the data behind that answer, every figure with its denominator.
Based on 428 US art director postings at 351 employers (collected through October 26, 2026):
- 46 of 243 postings that state a work model are fully remote (18.9%); 133 are hybrid, 64 are on site or tied to a named office, and 180 of the 428 never say
- 19 of 46 remote postings (41%) are freelance or contract
- $103K median posted pay (n=219 salaried ranges; middle of the pack $90K to $117K)
- $159K vs $81K: median pay for the Art Director title at tech companies (n=10) and at independent agencies (n=26)
- $94K vs $111K vs $136K: median pay for postings scoring 0-1 (n=90), 2-3 (n=104) and 4-6 (n=25) on the Seat Price Score below
- 1 of 18 stating postings at holding-company agencies is remote; Omnicom's three-days-in-office sentence appears in 18 of the postings
- 105 of 428 postings (24.5%) name AI tools; their median pay is $103K, against $105K for the rest
How We Collected This Data
Start with what this data can't see. Reddit blocks automated access at every mirror we tried, so there are no forum quotes here. Glassdoor, Indeed and ZipRecruiter return a 403 to scripts. And a large share of art direction never becomes a posting at all: the Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 62% of the 140,200 art directors in the US as self-employed. The freelance job a creative director books by text message is invisible to any job-posting method, including this one.
Here's what we could read. LinkedIn's public job search returned about 1,000 cards for "art director" across the US. Every variant we tried ("senior art director," "remote art director," "group art director") returned the same cards, and a state-by-state pass through California, New York, Texas and Illinois found nothing new, so we read the full text of all 950 matching LinkedIn postings, art director and the rungs above it. On top of that: 386 SimplyHired job pages (the Indeed network), 1,031 live Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and SmartRecruiters boards out of 3,834 company names tried, 465 live employer Workday career sites (828 tried), the Himalayas remote board and Amazon's job search.
Those sources produced 545 US copies, which collapsed to 428 requisitions at 351 employers. We merged the same title at the same employer, split it back apart when two copies posted different ranges (Razorfish has a Seattle seat at $39.05 to $59.82 an hour and an El Segundo seat at $81,225 to $111,100), and merged employer aliases (Skydance and Paramount post the same five art director jobs under both names). 367 of the 426 dated postings went up after July 28, 2026.
Titles in: associate and junior art director, art director, senior and lead art director, group, executive and principal art director, director of art, and art director/designer combinations. ACD, design director and creative director postings are counted separately as the next rungs. Out: "Senior AD/ICAM Administrator" (that AD is Active Directory), art teachers, volunteer and internship listings, and 56 non-US rows, including a Publicis Groupe Ukraine posting that LinkedIn tagged "Art, TX."
The work model comes from the posting text, and we hand-read every row our first pass marked remote. "Remote work available on Fridays" is a hybrid job. "2 weeks fully remote per year" is a perk on a Boulder job that wants you in on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Publicis' "Work Your World" program, up to six weeks a year from any Publicis office, is a perk. "Press checks (on-site or remote)" is a duty, and so are CBS Sports' "remote events." A SimplyHired "Remote" tag with no remote sentence in the posting doesn't count.
Pay: 219 salaried postings publish a range, and we use each range's midpoint. The 32 hourly postings are reported separately because 27 of them are contracts. Figures are base pay. We refresh this analysis quarterly, and these numbers reflect October 2026.
The Seat Price Score: Six Checks That Predict an Art Director's Pay
The Seat Price Score is a 0-to-6 count of six things a posting tells you about who pays for your work and what you'll own. It takes about a minute per listing, and you can run it before you scroll to the range.
The six checks, one point each:
- In-house. The employer sells its own product. Agencies, holding companies, staffing firms and design-subscription services score 0.
- No clients. The posting never uses the word "client" or "account."
- Tech, media or games. The employer is a software, internet, media, entertainment or game company.
- You own the system. The posting says you'll own, evolve or steward the visual identity, brand guidelines or design system.
- You lead people. You'll mentor or manage designers.
- 3D or CGI. The work includes 3D, CGI, Cinema 4D, Blender or Unreal.
Scoring:
- Client seat (0-1): $79K to $103K, median $94K (n=90). Agency, holding company, health agency or staffing firm. The posting talks about clients, accounts and rosters, and you execute concepts across several brands. Remote: 26 of 125 stating postings (20.8%).
- Brand seat (2-3): $100K to $126K, median $111K (n=104). In-house at a consumer, retail, publishing or nonprofit brand, or an agency seat that owns a system and leads people. Remote: 18 of 99 (18.2%).
- Owner seat (4-6): $120K to $155K, median $136K (n=25). In-house at a tech, media or games company, owning the system or leading a team, often with 3D or motion work. Remote: 2 of 19 (10.5%).
How to use it: Score the posting before the first call. If it's 0-1 and you already earn over $100K, ask how the agency bills your time and how many accounts you'd carry. If it's 4 or more, the range is the negotiation and the office days are the price.
The first three checks are about who signs the check, and that's where most of the money is. An agency sells your hours to a client, so your salary is capped by what that client will pay for an hour of art direction, split across a roster. In-house, creative is priced against the company's own revenue, and at a software, media or games company the creative is the face of a large product. Checks four through six are scope and craft. They pay in either setting, just less than switching who signs the check.
The bands hold inside the same title rung, which is the test that matters. If the score were only sorting juniors from seniors, the Art Director row below would be flat.
| Title rung | Client seat (0-1) | Brand seat (2-3) | Owner seat (4-6) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Associate Art Director | $66,096 (n=7) | $100,000 (n=11) | $110,700 (n=3) |
| Art Director | $80,750 (n=44) | $110,000 (n=61) | $131,250 (n=16) |
| Senior Art Director | $99,250 (n=39) | $132,500 (n=26) | $140,000 (n=5) |
Median of posted midpoints, salaried postings with a range, 428 requisitions collected through October 26, 2026. Owner-seat cells for associate and senior titles rest on fewer than 6 postings.
Score by score, the medians climb from $84,228 at 0 (n=48) to $99,125 at 1 (n=42), $101,375 at 2 (n=59), $122,500 at 3 (n=45) and $135,500 at 4 (n=19). Scores of 5 and 6 cover 5 salaried postings between them, too few to price alone.
Here's what that looks like on two real listings, both remote and both titled "Art Director." Sircle Media, an agency, asks one art director to take brand ownership of about 15 accounts; the word "client" or "account" appears 14 times, and it scores 0. It posts $85,000 to $95,000. StackAdapt, an advertising-technology company that calls itself "a remote first company," never says client in the duties, is in-house and is a tech employer, so it scores 3. Its US base band is $129,882 to $178,588. Same title, same remote status, $45K apart at the floor.
Two postings in this data beat their score, and both say why in the text. DEPT, an agency, posts a remote "Associate Director, Art Director" at $122,000 to $160,000 under a "US Remote Range," because it's an associate-director rung. Procter & Gamble's "Art Director / AI Creator" at Coho, its internal content house, scores 1 and posts $110,000 to $165,300, because it's a new AI content role.
Count the word "client" in a posting before you read the salary. Six or more and the range usually lands under $100K. Postings that never say client or account post a median of $112,500 (n=98). One or two mentions: $103,000 (n=57). Three to five: $95,570 (n=28). Six or more: $90,109 (n=36).
If you're scoring 40 postings by hand to find the six worth a cover letter, that's an evening gone each week. Remote Job Assistant's Auto-Apply sends tailored applications to the listings you'd have shortlisted anyway.

What Art Director Jobs Pay by Employer Type
Put the Seat Price Score aside for a moment and sort the same 428 postings by who's hiring. The spread is wider than most art directors expect, and the remote column runs almost opposite to the pay column.
| Employer type | Postings | Median posted pay (n) | Fully remote, of stating postings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tech companies | 33 | $163,000 (19) | 5 of 19 |
| Game studios | 11 | $162,725 (4) | 2 of 5 |
| Media and entertainment | 26 | $134,250 (20) | 1 of 19 |
| Staffing firms (client not named) | 35 | $112,500 (11) | 3 of 16 |
| Consumer brands and retail | 105 | $110,000 (64) | 4 of 51 |
| Other in-house (health systems, banks, universities, nonprofits) | 37 | $107,112 (18) | 5 of 17 |
| Health and pharma agencies | 23 | $95,695 (18) | 5 of 17 |
| Independent agencies | 129 | $86,775 (50) | 19 of 79 |
| Holding-company agencies | 25 | $80,000 (15) | 1 of 18 |
Four postings at printers and a design-subscription service are left out. Game studio pay rests on 4 ranges.
Hold the title still and the gap gets sharper:
| Same rung, different employer | Art Director | Senior Art Director |
|---|---|---|
| Tech companies | $158,618 (n=10) | $169,500 (n=9) |
| Consumer brands and retail | $110,000 (n=42) | $138,575 (n=11) |
| Independent agencies | $80,750 (n=26) | $99,625 (n=20) |
| Holding-company agencies | $77,500 (n=10) | $91,081 (n=4) |
A Senior Art Director at an independent agency posts less than a plain Art Director at a consumer brand. Pool every employer together and "Senior" looks worthless: Art Director postings have a $103K median (n=121), Senior Art Director postings $106K (n=70). That flat line is a sorting effect. Agencies print "Senior" on 76 of their 177 art director postings (43%); in-house teams print it on 42 of 212 (20%). Inside one employer type the word is worth real money, $19K at independent agencies and $29K at consumer brands, but the agency Senior's median of $97K (n=36) still sits $17K under an in-house plain Art Director's $114K (n=75). Only the group, executive and principal titles break away, at $168K (n=7), and none of the 7 that state a work model is remote.
The title doesn't price an art director. The check-signer does.
These medians come from the 219 salaried postings in our 428 that publish a range, using each range's midpoint, collected through October 26, 2026. They're base pay; the bonus and equity lines in tech postings sit on top. Ranges move, so check the linked sources for current figures.
The public benchmarks land in the same neighborhood. The BLS median for art directors is $114,850 (May 2025), with the bottom 10% under $64,900 and the top 10% over $213,050; advertising and PR firms pay a median of $121,490 and motion picture and video companies $142,570. Keep in mind that BLS wage data skips the 62% who are self-employed. Robert Half's art director salary page puts the range at $85,000 / $103,000 / $124,250, and its $103,000 midpoint is exactly our posted median. The Creative Circle 2025 Salary Guide, built from its own placements, runs Senior Art Director from $97,889 to $146,833 across its three tiers and Associate Creative Director (Art) from $114,700 to $172,050.

How to Raise Your Seat Price Score
The score is useful because you can move it, but every point has a price. Start from where you sit today and follow the first branch that fits.
1. Is your current seat a 0-1 (agency, holding company, health agency)?
- Yes, and your book is campaigns you concepted โ go in-house first, remote second. Payoff: the same Art Director title moves from $81K at an independent agency (n=26) to $110K at a consumer brand (n=42). Cost, in the postings' own words: clients become stakeholders (80 of 212 in-house postings use the word, against 27 of 177 agency postings), "high volume" shows up 34 times in-house against 14, and remote mostly disappears (4 of 51 stating consumer-brand postings). Some in-house seats are blunt about it: Apartments.com's Senior Art Director "is 5 days onsite in our Atlanta office," and Fanatics' trading-card art director is "onsite, in our Seattle office five days per week."
- Yes, and remote is the non-negotiable โ stay agency-side and pick the shop. Payoff: inside independent agencies, remote seats pay a little more, not less. The 6 remote independent-agency postings with a salaried range have a $98K median, against $83K for that agency type's hybrid and office postings (n=28). Cost: you're still $16K under an in-house plain Art Director ($114K, n=75), and 7 of the 19 remote independent-agency seats are contracts.
- Yes, at a health agency โ decide whether pharma is the book you want. Payoff: MLR experience travels between remote health shops (5 of 17 stating postings, $96K median). Cost: the raise is in-house at a consumer health or health-tech brand, and those seats rarely say remote.
2. Are you in-house already (score 2-3)?
- Add one point you control โ lead people or own the system. Postings where you'll lead people post $111K (n=84) against $100K (n=135). Postings where you'll own the brand system post $115K (n=31) against $100K (n=188), but read the fine print: 30 of those 67 system-owner postings also list production tasks like resizing, templates and print-ready files, against 119 of 361 others. "Own the visual identity" often means own the files too.
- Want a bigger jump โ move toward tech, media or games. That one check is worth more than any title: those employers post a $145K median (n=43) against $100K for everyone else (n=176).
3. Do you do 3D, CGI or heavy motion work?
- Yes โ price it. 3D and CGI postings post $123K (n=21) against $103K for the rest (n=198), and 7 of the 29 that state a work model are remote. They aren't production traps either: 13 of the 46 list production tasks, a lower share than the 136 of 382 postings without 3D.
4. Is fully remote the only answer?
- Yes โ you're mostly pricing contracts. The 3 salaried remote seats above $120K sit at tech companies and an agency associate-director rung. Past those, the 7 remote hourly postings have a median of $50 to $60 an hour, and all 32 hourly postings run $60 to $70.50. At a full 2,080 billed hours that's $125K to $147K, before the IRS self-employment tax of 15.3% (12.4% Social Security, 2.9% Medicare) that an employer would otherwise split with you, before your own health insurance, and before the weeks between contracts.
When two offers land in the same week, three tie-breakers settle most of them:
- Higher score beats higher title. A Senior Art Director title at a 0-1 seat usually pays less than an Art Director title at a 3.
- A salaried range beats a "remote" label on an hourly contract. 19 of the 46 remote postings are freelance or contract.
- Fewer client words beat better perks. A roster of 15 accounts is a production schedule, whatever the benefits paragraph says.

Where the Remote Art Director Jobs Are
Of the 46 fully remote art director postings, 19 are at independent agencies, 5 at health agencies, 5 at tech companies, 5 at other in-house employers, 4 at consumer brands, 3 at staffing firms, 2 at game studios and 1 each at a holding company, a media company and a design service. Across all 428 postings, that's 46 remote seats, or 10.7%. For context, Robert Half's analysis of Q2 2026 job postings found 82% of marketing and creative postings fully on-site, 14% hybrid and 4% fully remote.
The holding companies are the clearest "no." Omnicom prints its policy into the postings: "Omnicom's policy requires employees to work in the office for a minimum of three days a week, unless additional in-office days are directed by their agency or manager. Our objective is to increase this requirement over time, and many of our agencies as well as Omnicom's corporate group already require five days of in-office attendance." That sentence appears in 18 of the art director postings in this data, under 11 Omnicom agency names from BBDO to McCann, and in 23 more ACD, design director and creative director postings. All 18 are hybrid, and their median posted pay is $80K (n=13). Storyboard18 reported that under the November 2025 version of that policy, US employees who don't meet it "will not be eligible for salary reviews or promotions." WPP moved to four days a week from April 2025, and its postings say so: VML's reads "with teams in the office an average of four days a week," and Burson's "around four days a week."
The remote "yes" comes from smaller shops, and they say it plainly. Hook: "We are a remote first organization with a 'work from wherever' approach (within the US)." Broth: "a fully-remote, creatively-driven healthcare advertising agency." Princeton10: "P10 is remote-first, always has been." Bellweather: "We are committed to being a fully remote agency." These are the remote seats most art directors will actually land, and they pay agency money: the 6 remote independent-agency postings with a salaried range have a median of $98K.
Shoots don't decide whether an art director job is remote. The business model does. Postings that mention photo or video shoots are remote 12 of 67 times (17.9%); postings that don't are remote 34 of 180 times (18.9%). Gameday Men's Health posts its Creative Art Director as "Remote (travel for shoots and campaign production as needed)" at $95,000 to $130,000. A shoot is a few days of travel. A client roster is the job.
One rung up, remote gets easier. Associate Creative Director postings are remote 19 of 91 times (20.9%) with a median of $139K, design director postings 30 of 107 (28.0%) at $154K, and creative director postings 73 of 238 (30.7%) at $168K. If you're two years from an ACD title, our guide to remote creative director jobs covers what that rung looks like from the inside.
The Small Print on the 46 Remote Postings
Remote has conditions, and the 46 postings spell them out if you read past the location field.
Start with the employment line. 19 of the 46 are freelance or contract, several through staffing firms, and the staffing posts carry their own hedges: Creative Circle's reads "Location: remote (must reside in the US) but team prefers candidates local to NY/NJ," and 24 Seven's reads "Fully Remote OR Chicago, IL (Hybrid โ Wednesdays in office)." Only 16 of the 46 are salaried with a posted range, and their $99K median sits just under the $102K hybrid median. Three clear a $120K midpoint: Upstart ($138,600 to $192,000), StackAdapt ($129,882 to $178,588) and DEPT ($122,000 to $160,000).
Then the hours. 9 postings name a time zone; Razorfish's says "The role is a remote work set up, however on PST time zone," and Princeton10 states "a preference for Eastern time zone." 5 require travel for shoots or production and 3 for office time; Upstart's says "most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time." 2 want you near a city, like Collier.Simon's "remote role for someone based in Southern California, with regular in-person shoots throughout the greater Los Angeles area." And 2 are pipeline listings, a "Future Opportunity" and a talent pool, not open requisitions.
Then the workload. Agency remote seats are honest about it. Sircle Media's art director gets "Full brand ownership" for about 15 accounts: "You will own positioning, content direction, content systems, AND day-to-day art direction and client relationship." Princeton10 tells its associate art director: "This isn't a purely hands-off management role, you're still expected to have a strong point of view on the work itself, not just delegate it." A 15-account roster is how an agency pays for a remote seat.
Upstart adds a line worth reading on any remote tech offer: "Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location," set by compensation regions. The top of a remote band is priced for the most expensive region, not for yours.
| Flag in a remote posting | What it usually means | What to ask on the first call |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly pay or "freelance" in the title | The seat ends when the account or project does | "Is there a conversion path to staff, and on what timeline?" |
| "Future opportunity" or "talent pool" | No open requisition yet | "Is there budget for this role this quarter?" |
| A client roster, no rate or account count | You'll carry several brands at once | "How many accounts would I own, and how is my time billed?" |
| "Remote" plus a named office day | Hybrid for anyone local | "Is the office day required if I live outside the metro?" |
| A named time zone | Your hours follow the team's | "Which hours are core, and how often are reviews live?" |
| Remote "for someone based in" a region | Local-only remote, often for shoots | "How many shoot or production days a month?" |
The reason contract terms cluster in the remote rows is the same reason the pay does: agencies staff remote art directors against client hours. When the account ends, so does the seat.
Health Agencies: Remote-Friendly, Regulated and Cheaper
Health and pharma agencies are the steadiest remote option outside the independents: 5 of 17 stating postings are remote, and the median posted pay is $96K (n=18). The work comes with a review process most art directors outside healthcare have never seen. Blue Matter's art director posting lists this duty: "Prepare files for medical/legal/regulatory (MLR) review, incorporating feedback while maintaining design integrity." GSW's freelance senior art director is told to keep the work intact by "shepherding and negotiating content through regulatory and MLR processes." Princeton10 warns that its associate art director seat is "not an entry point into pharma advertising."
There's a regulation behind that. For TV ads aimed at consumers, the FDA's rule on the major statement of side effects (21 CFR 202.1) requires audio and on-screen text together, a font size, style, contrast and placement that "allow the information to be read easily," and no audio or visual elements during that statement "that are likely to interfere with comprehension." That's an art direction brief written into federal law, and it's why pharma shops ask for MLR experience by name.
The trade is simple. Health agencies pay less than in-house brands, but the regulated book travels well between remote health shops. Take one if pharma is the portfolio you want to own; skip it if the next move you're planning is a $130K in-house seat.
What the Postings Ask For
The tool lists split by setting more than by seniority. Figma appears in 170 of the 428 postings (39.7%), well above the 24% that O*NET's Lightcast data on 2025 art director postings shows. InDesign appears in 145 (33.9%), and those postings pay less: $99K against $110K without it, because print-heavy seats sit at agencies and publishers. 3D or CGI shows up in 46 postings (10.7%), with the premium above.
AI is common and not yet priced. 105 of 428 postings (24.5%) name AI tools: Midjourney in 15, Firefly in 9 and Runway in 8. The median pay is $103K with AI in the posting and $105K without. Four titles carry it, including Procter & Gamble's "Art Director / AI Creator" at $110,000 to $165,300 and SoFi's "Art Director, Generative AI (Contract)" at $60 to $72 an hour. The two AI titles with pay attached say more than the averages: one is a $110,000-to-$165,300 staff seat inside a consumer goods company, the other a $60-to-$72-an-hour contract at a fintech. Employers are buying the skill both ways. On the question everyone asks, BLS projects art director employment to grow 4% from 2025 to 2035, with about 12,200 openings a year.
Concepting is table stakes, not a raise. 265 of 428 postings (61.9%) ask for concepts, ideation or big ideas, and they post a median of $100K against $110K for the rest, because the concept-heavy listings are mostly agency seats. "Present and defend the work" shows up in 80 postings at a similar discount.
Experience asks are modest: a median of 5 years, 7 at tech and media companies, 4.5 at holding companies and 3 at health agencies. 336 of the 428 postings ask for a portfolio. If you're weighing the in-house tech path, our guides to remote product designer jobs and remote brand manager jobs cover the teams you'd sit beside, and art directors who live on set may find the shoot-side seats in remote photography jobs worth a look.
Most of the salaried seats above $100K are listed on our $100K+ remote job board, and the in-house tech ones cluster in product and design roles. Auto-Apply can work through those listings for you while you build the book.

Frequently Asked Questions
I'm a senior art director at an agency making $95K. Can I find a remote job that pays more?
Yes, but it's a narrow target. Only 16 of the 46 remote art director postings are salaried with a posted range, and their median is $99K. Three clear $120K at the midpoint: Upstart, StackAdapt and DEPT. The bigger raise is usually in-house and hybrid, where Senior Art Director postings at consumer brands have a median of $139K (n=11).
Do art directors make more in-house or at an agency?
In-house, by a wide margin. For the same Art Director title, tech companies post a median of $159K (n=10), consumer brands $110K (n=42), independent agencies $81K (n=26) and holding-company agencies $78K (n=10). Agencies are more likely to be remote: 19 of 79 stating postings at independent agencies, against 4 of 51 at consumer brands.
How do I tell if a remote art director job is a real staff role or a freelance gig?
Check the employment-type line, the pay unit and the employer name. 19 of the 46 remote postings in our data are freelance or contract, most pay by the hour, and several come through staffing firms like Creative Circle and 24 Seven. "Future opportunity" and "talent pool" titles are pipelines, not open roles.
What does a Seat Price Score of 3 mean for an art director job?
A 3 is the top of the Brand seat band: usually an in-house role at a tech or media company, or an in-house brand role where you own the system or lead people. Postings that score exactly 3 have a median of $122,500 (n=45), and 9 of the 46 that state a work model are remote. One more point, usually a direct report or system ownership, moves you into the Owner seat band at $136K.
Will AI replace art directors?
Not on the evidence in the postings. 105 of 428 (24.5%) name AI tools like Midjourney, Firefly or Runway, but they post about the same pay as the rest, and only 4 titles mention AI. BLS projects 4% growth for art directors from 2025 to 2035 and about 12,200 openings a year.
Is associate creative director a better bet for remote work than art director?
Slightly, and it pays much more. ACD postings are remote 19 of 91 times (20.9%) against 46 of 243 (18.9%) for art directors, with a median of $139K (n=76). Design director (28.0%) and creative director (30.7%) postings are remote more often still.
Should I go freelance as a remote art director?
Plenty of art directors already do: BLS counts 62% of them as self-employed. In our data, 57 of 428 postings are freelance or contract, and the 32 hourly postings have a median of $60 to $70.50 an hour. That's $125K to $147K at a full 2,080 billed hours, before health insurance, unpaid gaps and the time you spend selling the next job.
Find Your Next Remote Art Director Role
Here's the order we'd follow with these numbers. Under $100K at an agency, take the in-house seat even if it's hybrid; at the same title it's worth $29K. Over $110K in-house, add the point you're missing, a direct report or the brand system, and aim at tech, media or games, where the median goes from $100K to $145K. Remote above everything else, go to the independent and health shops that print "remote first" in the posting, and read the employment line before the salary: 19 of the 46 remote seats are contracts.
For the rung above, read our guide to remote creative director jobs, and if you work as an AD/CW team, the remote copywriter jobs guide covers the other half of the pair. The in-house creative seats are listed under marketing and growth roles, and the senior ones start on the $150K+ remote job board. Beyond the big boards, agency-side openings also show up on The One Club's job board and Working Not Working. When you're ready to send applications in volume, Auto-Apply handles the forms.
Remote is easy to find in art direction. A remote seat that pays like an in-house one is the thing worth searching for.
