You pull walkthrough evidence out of SharePoint, test user-access reviews in a GRC tool, and write findings in TeamMate or AuditBoard. None of that has needed a conference room in years. So you search "remote auditor jobs," and LinkedIn's landing page says there are more than 10,000. The first screen mixes the internal audit seats you came for with GMP lead auditors, aerospace AS9100 auditors, clinical-trial GCP auditors and medical coding reviewers.
That mix is the real story. "Auditor" covers at least five different jobs, and they aren't equally remote. Remote audit work clusters where the evidence is already digital and the employer isn't a bank. A coding auditor reading charts in Epic works from home almost by default. A bank internal auditor doing the same kind of testing on a laptop usually doesn't. Where the evidence sits, and who owns the building, decides where you sit.

We analyzed 3,422 US auditor job postings across 2,038 employers, first listed between January and October 2026. 554 of them say fully remote. This guide shows which kinds of audit work those 554 come from, what each pays, and how to read a posting for its remote odds before you apply.
Yes, auditors work remotely, but it depends on what you audit. 554 of the 1,589 postings that state a work model (34.9%) are fully remote, and 244 of those 554 are healthcare claims, coding and clinical audits, which are remote 77.4% of the time at an $83,658 median. Internal and IT audit is remote in 175 of 772 stating postings (22.7%) at a $114,758 median, and banks almost never post it remote (18 of 176). Public-accounting audit is remote in 33 of 268 (12.3%).
Here's the data behind that answer, each number with its denominator.
Based on 3,422 US auditor postings at 2,038 employers (January to October 2026):
- 554 of 1,589 postings that state a work model are fully remote (34.9%); 807 are hybrid, 156 on site, and 1,833 of the 3,422 never say
- 250 of 323 healthcare claims, coding and clinical audit postings that state a model are fully remote (77.4%), at an $83,658 median (n=229); 119 of those 229 ranges are hourly
- 175 of 772 internal and IT audit postings are fully remote (22.7%), at a $114,758 median (n=766). At banks it's 18 of 176 (10.2%); at tech and fintech employers, 20 of 36
- 33 of 268 public-accounting audit postings are fully remote (12.3%), at a $110,000 median (n=326)
- 89 of 144 quality, certification and premium audit postings that state a model are listed remote, but the remote quality seats that state a travel number say 50% (median, n=24)
- $95,668 vs $79,539: median pay for RN and clinical audit seats (n=49) vs coding audit seats (n=91)
- 0 of 41 open federal audit postings on USAJOBS are marked remote; 20 of the 41 are telework-eligible
- 3 days a week is the most common office requirement: 79 of the 146 hybrid postings that name a number
How We Collected This Data
Start with what we couldn't see. Indeed, Glassdoor and ZipRecruiter block automated reads, Reddit is closed to us, and the BLS data API returned errors all afternoon on the day we pulled. More than half the postings (1,833 of 3,422) never state a work model, and LinkedIn's public search ignores its own remote filter: the same search returns the same cards with or without it. A silent posting isn't a remote posting, so every share in this guide is given of the postings that state one.
The 3,422 postings come from four places, all pulled on October 24, 2026: LinkedIn's public job search (1,241 result pages across 70 keyword searches, 5,651 cards, 2,738 job pages read), SimplyHired, which carries the Indeed network's listings (56 searches, 5,099 cards, 1,115 job pages read), 717 employer career sites on Workday, and 2,566 Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and SmartRecruiters job boards. Federal jobs come from USAJOBS separately.
We read every audit-titled posting in full and set aside 541 outside the US, 95 first listed before 2026, 63 internships and campus programs, 32 non-audit jobs with "audit" in the title (sales, engineering, product and recruiting roles), and 20 AI-training gigs. Hotel night auditors, inventory counters and freight and payroll auditors were excluded at the title. The same requisition posted in several cities or on several boards counts once, which collapsed 781 copies.
Then we read every posting the first pass called remote or remote-optional, all 626 of them. The first pass got a lot wrong. Voya's "This role is remote; however, candidates must be located within commutable [about 30 miles] proximity to our Windsor office" is remote only if you live near Windsor. FormFactor's boilerplate says "A role is remote-eligible only when it is listed as 'Remote' in the job location," on a posting located in Livermore. Utah's state postings print "Remote Work / In-Office – In-Office / On-Site." Because some postings were found only by searches with "remote" in them, we also report the share without those: 442 of 1,457 (30.3%). On Workday, where we read every hit and the employers are large, it's 50 of 251.
Pay uses posted ranges only (1,511 of 3,422 publish one), taking the midpoint and annualizing hourly ranges at 2,080 hours. We cross-checked against BLS OEWS 2025 wages as published by O*NET OnLine for accountants and auditors ($83,680 median). 2,796 of the 3,422 postings were first listed in September or October 2026. We update this analysis quarterly.
The Evidence Map: Where the Audit Evidence Lives Sets Your Remote Odds
The Evidence Map sorts an audit job by where its evidence sits: on a screen that can be sent to you (the Screen seat), inside a company's own systems and people (the Controls seat), in an outside client's books and offices (the Client seat), or on a plant floor, a farm or a policyholder's premises (the Field seat). Each seat has its own remote odds, pay band and posting tells.
| Seat | Postings (employers) | Remote of stated | Remote odds | Median pay (n) | Hourly ranges | Evidence tell in the duties | What "remote" means |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Screen | 507 (372) | 250 of 323 (77.4%) | 8 in 10 | $83,658 (229) | 119 of 229 | medical records, claims, DRG, ICD-10 | home desk, production standards |
| Controls | 1,820 (1,218) | 175 of 772 (22.7%) | 2 in 10 | $114,758 (766) | 66 of 766 | controls, process owners, SOX, ITGC | depends on the employer |
| Client | 652 (279) | 33 of 268 (12.3%) | 1 in 10 | $110,000 (326) | 14 of 326 | engagements, clients, workpapers | rare; manager level |
| Field | 238 (175) | 89 of 144 (61.8%) | 6 in 10 listed | $80,080 (108) | 32 of 108 | on-site audits, territory, policyholders | home base, then travel |
Remote odds are the remote share of stating postings, rounded to the nearest ten percent. Here's what puts each seat where it is.
Screen seat: remote odds 8 in 10, $74,178-$96,370 for the middle half (n=229). Coding audits, DRG and clinical validation, revenue integrity, risk adjustment and payment integrity. The charts and claims arrive in Epic (named in 86 healthcare audit postings), an encoder or a claims system, so nobody needs you in a building to read them. ICD-10 is named in 258 of the 498 healthcare postings and CPT in 238. The gate is a credential, not a location: a coding certification is named in 303 of them and an RN in 104. Payment-integrity and coding vendors post remote seats almost exclusively (58 of 61 stating postings at firms such as Cotiviti, Gainwell, UASI, CorVel and Machinify), and hospitals, physician groups and other employers post them remote in 156 of 204.
Controls seat: remote odds 2 in 10, and the employer decides (median $114,758, middle half $90,480-$145,000, n=766). Internal audit, SOX testing and IT audit inside a company, bank, insurer, health system or university. The evidence is the company's own systems, documents and process owners. Most of it is digital, but the seat follows the company's office policy. Banks post internal and IT audit remote in 18 of 176 stating postings (10.2%). Non-financial companies do it in 100 of 368 (27.2%), health systems and plans in 23 of 65, and tech and fintech employers in 20 of 36, at a $136,795 median (n=53). Travel stays in the job either way: 301 internal audit postings state a travel percentage, at a median of 25%.
Client seat: remote odds 1 in 10 (median $110,000, middle half $89,462-$140,250, n=326). Financial-statement, benefit-plan and single audits at CPA firms. The tells are engagement teams, client sites (named in 127 of 652 postings), busy season (61) and the CPA (627 of 652 name it). The Big 4 postings in our set that state a model aren't remote (0 of 5). Mid-size and regional firms are where the remote seats are: 22 of 176 stating postings, and 15 of 98 at manager level.
Field seat: listed remote 6 in 10, but you travel (median $80,080, middle half $61,522-$111,280, n=108). ISO, GMP, GCP, food-safety and aerospace certification audits, plus insurance premium and claims-file audits. Postings say "on-site audits," "assigned territory" and "policyholder's location." The remote quality seats that state a travel number put it at a median 50% (15 of 24 say 50% or more). Premium field titles are listed remote 13 times out of 14, and EXL's spells out what that means: "travel on an average of 4 days per week within your assigned territory."
Public-sector auditors sit beside the map rather than on it. State, county and city audit postings are remote in 7 of 82 stating postings, and when they mention telework it usually means a hybrid schedule (32 of the 57 that name it). On USAJOBS, 0 of 41 open federal audit postings are marked remote.
How to use the Evidence Map on a posting:
- Read the duties for where the evidence is, before the title. "Medical records, claims, DRG, ICD-10" puts you in the Screen seat. "Controls, process owners, walkthroughs, SOX, ITGC" is the Controls seat. "Engagements, clients, workpapers, busy season" is the Client seat. "On-site audits, facilities, territory, policyholders" is the Field seat.
- If it's a Controls seat, look at the employer next. A bank, or a company with a headquarters attendance policy, means plan on hybrid. A remote-first tech or fintech company means the remote odds roughly double.
- If it's a Field seat, find the travel number. "Remote" there means where you sleep between trips.
Three real postings, read this way. Optum's "DRG Coding/Clinical RN Auditor" ("the flexibility to telecommute from anywhere within the U.S.," $35.00-$63.00 an hour) is a Screen seat. Twilio's "Senior Internal Auditor" ("remote-first work," $96,640-$120,800) and Morgan Stanley's "Internal Audit Associate – Fixed Income" ("Baltimore, MD (4x per week in office)," $86,000-$126,500) are the same Controls work at employers with opposite office policies. EXL's "Experienced Premium Insurance Field Auditor" ("Work from home when not in the field," plus those four travel days a week) is a Field seat.
The pattern holds from coding desks to plant floors. In audit, remote follows the evidence. If the evidence already lives on a screen, so can you.
If your evidence lives on a screen and you're still commuting, the next move is volume: the remote seats are spread across hundreds of employers, and most of them never say "remote" in the title.

Where the 554 Remote Auditor Jobs Are
By seat, the 554 fully remote postings split like this: Screen 250 (244 of them healthcare), Controls 175 (internal audit 141, IT audit 34), Field 89, Client 33, and public-sector 7.
Screen seat: healthcare audit is the biggest remote block
Not every healthcare audit desk pays the same. Coding audit is remote in 123 of 146 stating postings (84.2%) at a $79,539 median (n=91), and 61 of those 91 ranges are hourly. RN and clinical audit seats (DRG validation, clinical validation, CDI, utilization review, nurse auditor) are remote in 56 of 70 at a $95,668 median (n=49). Claims, billing and revenue-integrity audit is remote in 27 of 43 at $76,672 (n=36).
The top of the seat is leadership and RN work. Humana's Director of Risk Adjustment Regulatory Audits posts $150,000-$206,300 (remote-optional). Health Services Advisory Group's Director, Audits (Healthcare) is $133,000-$160,000, and PACS's Director of Clinical Compliance Audits is $130,000-$145,000. Indigenous Pact lists a Senior Coding Quality Auditor at $100,000-$140,000 with about 25% travel to clinics, and Machinify's Medical Review Nurse II (SNF/MDS) is $85,000-$100,000. The bottom is hourly: Sound Physicians' Associate Compliance Coding Auditor at $22.50-$27.00, Cotiviti's Audit Support COB at $18.00-$20.25.
If you're an RN thinking about this lane, our remote nursing jobs guide covers the other remote paths for nurses, and how state licences shape them.
Controls seat: non-bank companies post the remote internal audit jobs
The remote internal and IT audit seats come from companies outside banking: Twilio, Coinbase, Block, ServiceNow, Amgen, Stryker, FICO, Ferguson, CONMED, Sysco, CVS Health, the American Cancer Society, Advocate Health, and universities such as UC Berkeley and UC Davis. A sample of the ranges:
- Gallagher, Global IT Audit Director: $154,500-$301,500
- Block, Senior Manager, IT Internal Audit: $148,700-$223,100
- L3Harris, Senior Manager, Internal Audit: $126,000-$234,000
- Sysco, IT Audit Manager: $121,200-$202,000
- CVS Health, Manager, Corporate IT Audit (SOC Reporting): $101,970-$203,940
- Amgen, Corporate Audit Manager: $96,970-$131,194
- Coinbase, Internal Audit Senior Associate: $108,630-$127,800 ("a remote-first, but not remote-only company. Expect to get together quarterly")
- U.S. Financial Technology, Senior Internal Auditor: $109,250-$125,500
- American Cancer Society, Senior Auditor: $85,000-$90,000
- Harbor Freight Tools, Internal Controls Auditor, Entry Level: $55,500-$83,300
Banks say no in different ways. KeyBank lists two seats with a "Remote, United States" location while its boilerplate says it "prioritizes in-office presence." Capital One's hybrid postings say associates "typically spend 3 days per week in-person." Morgan Stanley's put "4x per week in office" in the location line. If you're testing controls at a bank now, our guide to remote compliance jobs covers the second-line seats that sit next to internal audit.
Client seat: remote public accounting is a manager-level, mid-size-firm thing
The remote public-accounting postings come from mid-size and regional firms and the recruiters who fill their seats. Wipfli's Audit Senior Manager, Health Care Industry posts $162,000-$220,000. BDO's Remote Audit Senior Manager (Digital Assets) is $150,000-$205,000. VanderHouwen's Assurance Manager search is $105,000-$140,000 for candidates in six western states, and LSL lists remote government assurance managers at $100,000-$141,000. Tential advertises a remote busy-season contract for audit seniors at $65-$75 an hour. Staff-level remote seats exist but pay like staff seats: Carr, Riggs & Ingram's Associate, Audit is $60,000-$75,000.
Field seat and the public sector
Certification and life-sciences audit pays well when it's senior. IQVIA's Senior QA Auditor, GCP Audits posts $75,400-$188,600, EAGLE Certification's Aerospace Lead Auditor $120,000-$200,000, and DNV's FSSC 22000 Food Safety Lead Auditor $115,000-$125,000. Insurance premium audit is the other half of the seat: Pie Insurance runs desk audits "via mail, phone, and virtual platforms" (Premium Auditor I $55,000-$70,000, Manager $95,000-$120,000). EXL and ARMStrong hire field auditors who work from home between policyholder visits. Our remote insurance jobs guide covers the rest of that industry.
State and local audit offices are remote in 7 of 82 stating postings, and the federal government in 0 of 41 on USAJOBS, with telework available on 20 of those 41.
What Remote Auditors Earn
The figures below are posted ranges. 1,511 of the 3,422 postings publish one; we take the midpoint and annualize hourly ranges at 2,080 hours. As a cross-check, BLS OEWS 2025 data on O*NET puts the median for accountants and auditors at $83,680, for financial examiners at $94,160 and for registered nurses at $97,550. Ranges move with the market, so treat them as a snapshot of October 2026 postings.
Here is the ladder for internal and IT audit, the seat most readers of this guide sit in:
| Controls seat level (internal and IT audit) | Postings | Remote of stated | Median pay (n) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Associate, staff, junior | 178 | 28 of 82 (34.1%) | $85,000 (83) |
| Auditor (no level in title) | 337 | 32 of 112 (28.6%) | $90,000 (122) |
| Senior auditor | 584 | 56 of 255 (22.0%) | $104,000 (233) |
| Manager, supervisor, lead | 449 | 39 of 200 (19.5%) | $140,600 (210) |
| Senior manager, director, CAE | 272 | 20 of 123 (16.3%) | $174,714 (118) |
IT audit carries a premium at the top: $141,500 at manager level (n=59) and $177,528 for directors and above (n=26). Remote odds fall as you climb. Senior leaders run audit committees and teams, and companies want them near both.
| Screen seat sub-seat (healthcare audit) | Postings | Remote of stated | Median pay (n) | Hourly ranges |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coding audit | 217 | 123 of 146 (84.2%) | $79,539 (91) | 61 of 91 |
| RN and clinical audit | 115 | 56 of 70 (80.0%) | $95,668 (49) | 19 of 49 |
| Claims, billing, revenue integrity | 70 | 27 of 43 (62.8%) | $76,672 (36) | 20 of 36 |
| Directors and heads of audit | 12 | 5 of 8 | $142,000 (6) | 0 of 6 |
Remote doesn't buy you a raise. Across all 3,422 postings, the remote median is about $90,600 (n=304) against $110,000 for hybrid seats (n=388), because so many remote seats are coding audits. Inside internal audit the gap mostly disappears: remote senior auditors post a $103,731 median (n=31) against $100,000 for hybrid and on-site seniors (n=60). Managers are the exception, at $130,000 remote (n=19) against $146,425 (n=56).
The remote audit job that's easiest to land pays the least. Coding audit is remote in 123 of 146 stating postings, but its median is $79,539 and two-thirds of its ranges are hourly (61 of 91). Vendors price it as production work: charts reviewed per day against an accuracy target, with 49 healthcare postings naming a productivity or accuracy standard. It's a fine seat if you're a coder moving up, and a pay cut if you're an internal auditor moving sideways.
The $75K line is easy to clear in most seats: 1,244 of the 1,511 posted midpoints are $75,000 or more. The pockets below it are coding audit, premium field audit and government audit ($72,576 median, n=82). If you're comparing those numbers with the wider accounting market, our remote accounting jobs guide covers the staff and senior accountant ladder, and remote finance jobs lists current openings.

The seat you choose sets most of the pay and most of the remote odds. The next section covers what the remote postings ask for in return.

The Small Print on "Remote" Audit Jobs
249 of the 626 remote or remote-optional postings attach a limit. Travel is the most common (181), then a state or residence rule (62), contract terms (24), a time-zone window (14) and a live-near-an-office rule (9).
A few of them, quoted from the postings:
- Twilio's internal audit seat is "not eligible to be hired in CA, CT, NJ, NY, PA, WA."
- Advocate Health: "remote work is NOT permitted for short or long periods in: CA, CO, CT, HI, MA, MD, MN, NJ, NY, OR, RI, VT, WA."
- CarolinaEast's coding validation auditor: "MUST LIVE IN North Carolina as a resident for this remote position."
- James Moore & Co.'s audit manager can work "remotely in Florida for candidates living within two hours of our Daytona Beach, Gainesville, or Tallahassee offices."
- Bread Financial's IT audit manager: "3 to 4 days per month are required in office if within 60 miles."
- Gainwell's long-term care auditor must reside in the Eastern or Central time zone.
- Ferguson's senior internal auditor is "approved to be fully remote," with "Travel 10-35%, including Canada" and a trip to headquarters at least once a year.
- Habitat for Humanity's senior auditor is "remotely based within the US and will require 40-60% domestic and/or international travel."
Hybrid postings are vague about days. Only 146 of 807 name a number, and 3 days is the most common (79), then 4 (44, including 18 Morgan Stanley postings), 2 (20) and 1 (3). In the public sector, "telework" usually means hybrid: New York State's internal audit director posting says "Telecommuting may be available up to 50% of work schedule," and South Carolina's says "Remote work is not available."
If the posting says this, ask that:
- "Remote" plus a city, an office or a mile radius. You're remote only if you live nearby. Ask whether candidates outside the area get interviews.
- "Remote" plus a travel percentage. Do the math: 25% of a 50-week year is about 12 weeks on the road. Ask how much of it is overnight.
- A bank posting with a remote location and in-office boilerplate. Ask which days the audit team actually comes in, and whether that's changed in the last year.
- A field or premium seat. Ask how big the territory is, how many visits a week, and who pays the mileage.
- A state or county posting that mentions telework. Ask for the written telework policy and when new hires become eligible.
A remote quality auditor is a home-based traveler. So is a field premium auditor, and a lot of internal auditors with "remote" in the title. Read the travel line before you count the commute you're saving.
How to Move Into a Remote Audit Seat
Pick the door that matches where you're starting
You're an internal auditor at a bank. The same work at a non-bank pays about the same and is remote far more often. Internal and IT audit at non-financial companies posts a $113,725 median (n=380) against $118,002 at banks (n=159), and it's remote in 27.2% of stating postings against 10.2%. Fintech and payments companies value bank regulatory audit experience in particular. Banks keep their auditors close. In IT audit the gap is wider: 2 of 38 stating bank postings are remote, against 19 of 82 at non-financial companies.
You're a Big 4 or CPA-firm senior. Public accounting rarely goes remote (33 of 268), and at the Big 4, none of the 5 stating postings in our set did. The direct route is internal or IT audit at a non-bank, where seniors post a $104,000 median and 22.0% of stating seats are remote. If you'd rather stay in public accounting, look at mid-size firms at manager level, and at recruiter postings that advertise remote audit seats (Sherwood's "Fully Remote | $100K-$160K Base," Distinct's "Audit Senior Remote within Illinois").
You're a SOX tester. Our read, from the counts: SOX is the strongest office signal in an internal audit posting, stronger than travel. Internal and IT audit postings that name SOX are remote in 36 of 255 stating cases (14.1%), against 139 of 517 without it (26.9%), while remote and hybrid internal auditors state the same median travel (25%). SOX programs sit at public companies whose quarterly testing calendar runs through the controller's office and whose attendance policy was written for headquarters. That's our interpretation, not something the postings say. If you want remote, aim for operational, compliance and IT audit seats outside banking.
You're an IT auditor. CISA is named in 323 of 387 IT audit postings, and only 32 of those use "required" wording against 143 "preferred." The remote IT audit seats sit at non-financial companies (19 of 82 stating postings) and health organizations (7 of 16), not at banks. If you're weighing a move into security instead, our remote cybersecurity jobs guide maps those ladders, and remote risk management jobs covers the internal-audit-to-GRC path.
You're a registered nurse. Clinical validation, DRG and utilization audit is remote in 56 of 70 stating postings at a $95,668 median. Postings that name an RN licence pay a $93,420 median (n=27). Expect state licence and residence rules and production targets. The higher-paid end is DRG validation and clinical leadership: Cotiviti's DRG clinical validation auditor posts $45.67 an hour, about $95,000 a year.
You're a certified coder. The remote coding audit seat is easy to find and usually hourly. The step up is the CPMA (named in 106 healthcare audit postings), DRG or clinical validation work, or an audit lead or educator seat. Healthcare audit leaders post a $142,000 median (n=6).
You're a quality or premium auditor. Your seat is already listed remote. What you can negotiate is the territory, the travel and the mileage.
CPA, CIA or CISA: they buy pay, not distance
In internal audit, the CPA is named in 893 of 1,433 postings, but only 95 of those use "required" wording, against 467 "preferred" or "a plus." The CIA is named in 835 (76 required, 436 preferred). Within the same level, CIA-named senior internal audit postings pay a $103,300 median (n=111) against $95,000 (n=57), and managers $142,802 (n=92) against $136,000 (n=59). CPA-named internal audit postings pay $116,900 (n=361) against $94,900 (n=219), and they're remote in 76 of 392 stating cases against 65 of 199. That's association, not cause: CPA-heavy seats sit at public companies and banks. In internal audit, the CPA buys pay, not distance.
The IIA lets you sit for the CIA before you have the experience, but you have three years to pass all three parts. You need 1 year of experience with a master's, 2 with a bachelor's, or 5 without a degree, and quality, risk, compliance and external audit all count. ISACA's CISA requires five years of IS audit, control or security experience to certify, and the exam costs US$575 for members or US$760 for non-members.
The IIA's CIA eligibility page has the full experience rules, and ISACA's CISA page the current exam fees. For how those credentials stack up against others for remote work, see our best certifications for remote jobs.
AI and shrinking audit budgets
Postings ask auditors to audit AI more than they suggest AI will replace them. 550 of 1,820 internal and IT audit postings mention AI: 342 treat it as something to audit or govern, and 322 as a tool you'll use. Budgets are the bigger pressure. In the IIA's 2026 North American Pulse of Internal Audit, the share of audit functions reporting budget increases fell from 34% to 23%, cuts rose from 11% to 19% (n=366), and 18% of chief audit executives reported staff reductions. Our read: fewer in-house seats, more co-sourcing, and AI governance as a growing audit subject.
The remote seats are spread across 2,038 employers, and most don't put "remote" in the title. Apply widely and early, because the good remote internal audit seats close fast.
