You've pitched, placed, and killed stories from a kitchen table for three years, and the reporter who covers your account has never seen your face. Yet every interview still asks about your "media relationships" as if they live in a conference room, and every search for remote public relations jobs returns "remote" postings that want you in San Jose four days a week or at an agency for $72,000. It feels like the market is lying to you.
It is, a little. But not in the way you think. "Remote PR job" is two different jobs wearing one label. One is an in-house communications seat at a company that stopped renting offices, and it pays $141,520 to $245,000 in the postings we read. The other is an agency seat at an independent firm that hires across a list of states, and it pays $58,000 to $95,000 until you make account director. The job-board filter can't tell them apart. The body text can, and it does so in three clauses you can read in ninety seconds.

We analyzed 95 unique US public relations and communications postings across 55 employers, pulled directly from 877 company career boards (29,029 live postings of all kinds) on September 16, 2026, and checked every remote claim against the posting text rather than the checkbox. This guide covers what the data shows, the fine print that decides whether remote is real, what remote PR work pays by rung, why the pay numbers you see online disagree by $70,000, and which employers are actually hiring for it.
Based on our analysis of 95 unique US PR and communications postings across 55 employers (September 2026):
- 16% (n=10 of 64) of in-house PR and communications postings were verifiably remote by body text; 42% (n=13 of 31) of agency postings were
- 27% (n=4 of 15) of in-house postings the ATS flagged as remote were contradicted by their own body text
- $170,400 median posted floor and $234,000 median posted ceiling for in-house roles with a range (n=31 of 64); 30 of 31 floors were at or above $100K
- $77,500 median posted floor and $100,000 median posted ceiling for agency roles with a range (n=24 of 31); 6 of 24 floors were at or above $100K, all Account Director and above
- $74,750 BLS median for Public Relations Specialists and $146,910 for Public Relations Managers (May 2025)
- 46% (n=41 of 90 with body text) named media relations; 36% (n=32 of 90) named a media database (Muck Rack, Cision, or Meltwater); 0 of 90 mentioned APR accreditation
Look at the two floors: $77,500 at agencies, $170,400 in-house. Same skills, same job boards, a $93,000 gap. The rest of this post explains where that gap comes from and how to end up on the right side of it.
How We Collected This Data
The figures in this post come from our analysis of 95 unique US public relations and communications postings collected on September 16, 2026, by querying the public APIs of 877 company career boards (183 Greenhouse, 101 Ashby, 35 Lever, 558 SmartRecruiters) plus keyword searches across 20 large-employer Workday tenants. We kept titles containing public relations, PR, media relations, communications, corporate affairs, public affairs, or analyst relations, and removed telecommunications, communications engineering, "communications, media and entertainment" sales roles, interns, evergreen "future opportunities" posts, and non-US locations. Where one role was posted separately for several states (Highwire, Fivetran, Method Communications), we counted it once.
Remote status was decided by reading the posting body, not the ATS flag, because the flag was wrong in both directions. Pay ranges come from the posting itself: the pay-transparency paragraph in Greenhouse listings, the compensation field in Ashby and Lever, and the employer-entered compensation object in SmartRecruiters, which we treat as a weaker tier. We cross-referenced against BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for May 2025, accessed through O*NET because bls.gov blocks automated requests, plus Payscale and the Robert Half 2026 Salary Guide.
Know the skew: the sample leans toward AI labs, fintech, and Bay Area employers, because those are the companies on queryable ATSs in pay-transparency states, so posted ranges run high against BLS. Reddit, Indeed, Glassdoor, ZipRecruiter, PRWeek, and Muck Rack block automated access, so their figures appear here only as reported by secondary sources, never as verified pages. We update this analysis quarterly.
The Clause Check: How to Tell If a Remote PR Posting Is Real
The remote checkbox in an applicant tracking system is a field a recruiter fills in. Nobody audits it. In our pull, Lambda's Executive Communications Manager posting carried a remote flag and said in its second sentence that the job "requires presence in our San Francisco or San Jose office location 4 days per week." Two OpenAI communications roles were flagged remote and "based in Washington, DC," one of them offering relocation assistance. SpaceX's Internal Communications Manager listing ended with "Remote or hybrid work will not be considered." In the other direction, all five of Bospar's postings were flagged not remote with a San Francisco location, while the body said "Everyone works remotely. Everyone. There's not even a single office – anywhere!"
Four of the fifteen in-house postings flagged remote were contradicted by their own text. So we stopped reading flags and started reading clauses.
The Clause Check: A 10-point rubric that scores whether a "remote" PR or communications posting is genuinely remote, read from three clauses in the body text.
- The state clause answers where you're allowed to live. Airbnb's Internal Communications Lead: "you must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity." Method Communications: "open to remote candidates located in AL, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IL, MA, NJ, NM, NY, OR, TX, UT, VA, or WA." Fivetran posted its Senior Internal Communications Manager for exactly six states.
- The surge clause answers how often you have to show up. Coinbase: "remote-first, but not remote-only… Expect to get together quarterly for intense in-person working sessions called 'surges.'" Anthropic: "in one of our offices at least 25% of the time." Lambda: four days a week.
- The pay-zone clause answers which salary range applies to your zip code. Affirm's Senior Manager, Financial Communications: $185,000–$245,000 in the San Francisco, New York, and Seattle band, $164,000–$224,000 for "all other U.S. states." Twilio's remote PR roles are "not eligible to be hired in San Francisco, CA, Oakland, CA, San Jose, CA, or the surrounding areas." Highwire's Colorado and Illinois bands run $20,000 to $24,000 below its California and New York bands for the same title.
| Clause | What the posting says | Example | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| State | "must live in a state where [company] has a registered entity" / a list of two-letter codes | Airbnb, Method (16 states), Fivetran (6 states) | If your state isn't listed, you're not a candidate. No cover letter changes tax registration. |
| Surge | "quarterly… surges" / "at least 25% of the time" / "4 days per week" | Coinbase, Anthropic, Lambda | Quarterly is remote. Days per week is a hub job with a remote flag. |
| Pay-zone | Two ranges by metro / "not eligible to be hired in [metro]" | Affirm, Twilio, Highwire | The range you'll be offered is set by where you sit, so anchor on the band that applies to you. |
Scoring:
- 0–3 Hub-Tethered ($165,000–$270,000 posted): The flag says remote and the body names an office and a number of days. Lambda ($203,000–$270,000, four days in SF or San Jose), OpenAI's Government Partnerships Communications Lead ($187,000–$266,000, DC-based), SpaceX's Internal Communications Manager ($165,000–$240,000, on-site only). These carry the highest ranges in the dataset, and you'll be moving.
- 4–7 State-Listed Remote ($58,000–$249,000 posted): Genuinely remote inside a named list of states, sometimes with a surge clause. Method Communications' AE through Account Director ($58,000–$95,000 where posted), Highwire's SAE through SVP ($63,000–$249,000 across 17 states), Fivetran, Airbnb, Coinbase's four Remote-USA communications roles. Most real remote PR work lives in this band.
- 8–10 Anywhere-US Remote-First ($141,520–$245,000 posted): Remote is the company's default, not the role's exception, and the only clause left is pay-zone. Twilio's Principal PR Manager ($141,520–$176,900) and CEO Communications Director ($171,120–$213,900), Affirm's Senior Manager, Financial Communications, MongoDB's VP of Global Communications ("fully remote within the United States"), and Bospar, which has no office at all.
How to use it: Find the three clauses before you apply. If the state clause excludes you, stop. If the surge clause names days per week, score it 0–3 and treat the salary as a hub salary. Use the pay-zone clause to decide which end of the range to anchor on when the offer comes.
The state clause is the one candidates try to argue with, and it's the one that can't be argued. Deel's remote payroll guide puts the mechanism plainly: "A single remote employee performing services from their home state creates taxable nexus for the employer in that state," which means registering with that state's revenue and labor departments, paying unemployment insurance there, and filing in a new jurisdiction forever. A 16-state list is the list of states where the company has already done that paperwork. The state list in a remote posting is a tax registration, not a preference. Offering to move doesn't change it.
Reading three clauses on ninety postings a week is exactly the kind of work that eats the hours you'd rather spend on the ten that pass. That's what an auto-apply service is for.

What Remote Public Relations Jobs Pay in 2026
Start with the spine, then the postings. According to BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for May 2025, accessed via O*NET, the two PR occupations sit far apart, and that gap matters more than any single number you'll see on a salary aggregator.
| Occupation (BLS SOC) | 10th | 25th | Median | 75th | 90th | Employment (2024) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Public Relations Specialists (27-3031) | $44,110 | $56,260 | $74,750 | $100,370 | $135,150 | 315,900 |
| Public Relations Managers (11-2032) | $82,410 | $106,580 | $146,910 | $204,520 | $284,990 | 83,200 |
| State medians, Specialists / Managers | CA $85,030 / $167,980 | NY $81,250 / $180,880 | DC $102,740 / $197,600 |
Both occupations are projected to grow faster than average (5% to 6%) from 2024 to 2034, with 27,600 annual openings for specialists and 6,600 for managers. Note that the "manager" occupation is not what an agency calls a manager. BLS counts the people who own a communications function, which is closer to director scope in-house.
Salary ranges below derive from our analysis of 95 unique US PR and communications postings collected September 16, 2026, cross-referenced with BLS OEWS May 2025 and Payscale data. Where an employer posted different ranges for different states, we cite the band for the states named. Ranges shift as markets move, so check the linked sources for current figures.
| Rung | Agency posted range (n) | In-house posted range (n) | Typical Clause Check band |
|---|---|---|---|
| Associate / Account Executive / Specialist | $47,000–$76,000 (n=7): Walker Sands Media Relations Specialist $47,000–$51,000; Method Junior AE $50,000–$67,000; Highwire AE $54,000–$72,000; Method AE $58,000–$76,000 | $76,000–$155,000 (n=2): Shield AI Communications Associate $76,000–$110,000; Helion Corporate Communications Specialist $119,000–$155,000 | Agency 4–7 (Method) or hybrid; in-house 0–3 |
| Senior AE / Account Manager / In-house Manager | $63,000–$125,000 (n=8): Highwire SAE $63,000–$90,000; Method SAE $75,000–$95,000; Highwire Account Manager $80,000–$105,000; Highwire Senior Account Manager $90,000–$125,000 | $130,000–$245,000 (n=16): Later Senior Manager, PR $130,000–$160,000; Twilio Principal PR Manager $141,520–$176,900; Snowflake Senior Executive Communications Manager $152,000–$199,500; Plaid Internal Communications $170,400–$224,400; Affirm Senior Manager, Financial Communications $185,000–$245,000 | Agency hybrid to 4–7; in-house 0–3 to 8–10 |
| Account Director / Group Director / In-house Director or Lead | $98,000–$150,000 (n=3): Real Chemistry Account Director $98,000–$115,000; Highwire Account Director $110,000–$150,000; Real Chemistry Group Director $130,000–$150,000 | $122,900–$310,000 (n=10): Block Communications Lead $122,900–$184,300; Twilio CEO Communications Director $171,120–$213,900; Cohere Director, Corporate Communications $190,000–$290,000; Cloudflare Senior Director, Executive Communications $226,000–$310,000 | Agency 4–7 (Highwire); in-house mostly 0–3 |
| VP / SVP / Head | $130,000–$249,000 (n=4): Teneo VP $130,000–$150,000; Highwire VP $130,000–$195,000; Highwire SVP $175,000–$249,000 | $290,000–$360,000 (n=1): Freshworks VP Corporate Communications (SmartRecruiters compensation field) | Highwire 4–7; Teneo and Freshworks 0–3 |

Two things jump out of that table. The in-house column starts where the agency column ends, and the highest in-house numbers belong to hub-tethered roles. Remote-first in-house seats (Twilio, Affirm) post $141,520 to $245,000. The $290,000-plus seats are in San Mateo and San Francisco, four or five days a week.
Why Payscale says $82K and BLS says $147K for the same title
Search "PR manager salary" and you'll get three answers that can't all be right. Payscale reports an average base of $81,637 for a Public Relations Manager from 589 self-reported profiles as of June 2026. BLS reports a median of $146,910 for Public Relations Managers. The Robert Half 2026 Salary Guide lists a Communications Manager starting range of $77,750 to $105,000. Our in-house postings with "manager" in the title had a median floor above $150,000.
The data isn't wrong. The title is doing three different jobs. Payscale's "PR Manager" profiles skew toward agency account managers and generalists at small companies, where the title arrives around year four. Robert Half's number is a starting range for someone new to the role. BLS's Managers occupation counts people who run a function and a budget, which is what an in-house "Communications Manager" at a 2,000-person tech company actually does. Aggregators like Remote Rocketship compound the confusion by averaging all of it into one figure ($115,282 across 249 postings, by its own count). When you price yourself, pick the occupation that matches the scope of the seat, not the word on the business card.
Why agency pay stops where it stops
The agency ceiling isn't about talent. Gould+Partners' agency benchmarks, published by O'Dwyer's, lay out the model: each professional has about 1,700 available client hours a year, the utilization target for account executives is 90% or better (the last published industry figure was 84.1%, down from 89.1%), revenue per professional runs $200,000 to $240,000, and a profitable firm keeps direct labor at 55% or less of net revenue. Run the arithmetic on a $220,000-revenue professional at 55% direct labor and the fully loaded cost of that seat tops out near $120,000, benefits included. That's why Highwire's Senior Account Manager range ends at $125,000 and Method's Senior AE at $95,000, and why the same person in-house at Twilio is posted at $141,520 to $176,900.
Agency pay isn't capped by your talent. It's capped by 1,700 hours a year at 85% utilization.
Survey data points the same direction. PRWeek's 2025 US salary survey put the overall PR median at $125,000 (up 1.6% year over year, as summarized by survey respondents who published its highlights). Muck Rack's 2025 State of PR, as reported in coverage of the study, puts brand-side pay around $110,000 against $83,500 at agencies. Ragan's 2025 survey of more than 400 communicators found that roughly one-third earn $100,000 to $149,000 and 52% consider themselves underpaid. If you want the $100K-plus remote roles, the survey medians, the BLS occupation, and our posted ranges all say the same thing: the money is in-house.
A decision rule that follows from the table: if you're at an agency and your posted band tops out under $95,000 (every SAE range we found), don't negotiate internally first. Apply to 30 or more remote in-house roles that pass the Clause Check, because the in-house floors start at $130,000 and the only way to learn your market price is an offer letter.

Agency vs In-House: Where the Remote Seats Actually Are
Big-agency PR is not remote, and the reason is one level above the agency. The holding companies decided.
| Holding company | Return-to-office policy | Effective | Agencies affected |
|---|---|---|---|
| Omnicom | At least three days a week unless designated remote; new hires with under three years' tenure need approval for remote | April 1, 2024 | FleishmanHillard, Golin, Porter Novelli, Ketchum (post-merger) |
| Publicis Groupe | Three days a week, mandatory Mondays, no consecutive remote days | Early 2024 | MSL and Publicis PR shops |
| WPP | Average of four days a week | April 1, 2025 | Burson, Ogilvy PR |
| IPG (pre-merger) | Hybrid; agencies set their own | December 2022 | Weber Shandwick (three days from September 2023, per reporting) |
| Edelman (independent) | About 60% of time in office, roughly three days | 2022 | Edelman US |
Sources: eMarketer's December 2024 comparison of holding-company policies, Campaign Brief and Adweek on WPP, WorkLife on Edelman. The Omnicom–IPG merger added a second problem to the first: Porter Novelli was folded into FleishmanHillard and Ketchum into Golin in February 2026, after 4,000 post-merger job cuts announced in December 2025. The big-agency seat is less remote and less secure than it was two years ago.
So where are the remote agency seats? At independents that never had a parent to answer to. Bospar, the tech PR firm, has been all-virtual since before it was fashionable; its postings say staff cover "all continental US time zones." Method Communications hires remote across sixteen states or hybrid two days a week in San Francisco, New York, Salt Lake City, or Boston. Highwire posts its Account Director, Senior AE, VP, and SVP roles across seventeen states with a remote tag, while keeping its AE and Account Manager rungs on a "flexible hybrid work model." That's 13 of the 31 agency roles in our pull, and it's a real path if you're early in your career and want to skip the commute.
In-house, the remote seats cluster at companies that made remote the operating model rather than a perk: Twilio, Coinbase, Affirm, Airbnb, MongoDB. Ten remote roles across 43 in-house employers. The other 33 employers, including Anthropic, Stripe, Figma, Cloudflare, Handshake, Vercel, and every OpenAI role, hire communications people to a hub.
There's a trade you should see clearly before you make it. Muck Rack's 2025 State of PR survey of more than 1,000 practitioners, as reported by Durée & Company, found that half of agency professionals feel "very valued" by leadership, against 16% of brand-side professionals. In-house pays more and can be remote. It is also where communications people most often feel like a cost center.
Going remote at an agency changes your commute, not your ceiling. Method's remote Senior AE and Highwire's remote Senior AE post $75,000–$95,000 and $63,000–$90,000. The same experience level in-house at a remote-first company posts $141,520 and up. If remote is the goal and money is also the goal, the agency seat is a stepping stone, not a destination.
Who's Hiring Remote PR and Communications Professionals
These are the employers whose postings passed the Clause Check when we read the body text, with the clause that governs each one. Titles and ranges are from the postings as of mid-September 2026; treat them as evidence that the employer hires this way, not as a live listing.
| Employer | Role | The governing clause | Posted range | Clause Check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twilio | Principal PR Manager; CEO Communications Director | Remote-first; "not eligible to be hired in" the SF Bay Area; ad-hoc in-person gatherings | $141,520–$176,900; $171,120–$213,900 | 8–10 |
| Affirm | Senior Manager, Financial Communications | "Remote-first company"; two pay bands by metro | $185,000–$245,000 (SF/NY/Seattle); $164,000–$224,000 elsewhere | 8–10 |
| MongoDB | Vice President, Global Communications | "hybrid capacity at any of our U.S. offices or fully remote within the United States" | Not posted | 8–10 |
| Bospar | PR Account Director; Account Associate (several) | "Everyone works remotely… not even a single office"; SF Bay Area preferred | Not posted | 8–10 |
| Coinbase | Communications Manager, Policy & Public Affairs; Manager, Product Communications; Internal Communications Manager; Senior Internal Communications Manager, People | "remote-first, but not remote-only"; quarterly in-person surges | Varies by location (pay-transparency notice) | 6–7 |
| Airbnb | Internal Communications Lead | "US - Remote Eligible"; must live in a registered-entity state; occasional office days or offsites | Not posted | 5–7 |
| Highwire | Account Director; Senior AE (B2B Tech); VP; SVP (Health, Professional Services) | Posted across 17 states with a remote tag; lower bands in CO and IL | $110,000–$150,000; $63,000–$90,000; $130,000–$195,000; $175,000–$249,000 | 5–7 |
| Method Communications | Account Executive; Senior Account Executive; Account Director (B2B Tech PR) | Remote in 16 named states, or hybrid two days a week in four cities | $58,000–$76,000; $75,000–$95,000; not posted | 5–7 |
| Fivetran | Senior Internal Communications Manager | Posted only for TX, PA, WA, CO, NY, and CA | Not posted | 4–6 |
| CVS Health | Manager, Executive Communications | "Work from home" location, 13 listed locations (Workday) | Not captured | 4–7 |
| Sr. Lead, Corporate Communications | Location field reads "New York, NY, US; Remote, US"; body doesn't elaborate | Not posted | Unverified |
For contrast, the highest posted ranges in the pull were hub jobs: OpenAI's Communications Manager, Monetization at $297,000–$330,000 and Head of Analyst Relations at the same band (San Francisco), Freshworks' VP of Corporate Communications at $290,000–$360,000 (San Mateo), Lambda's Executive Communications Manager at $203,000–$270,000 (four days on site), Handshake's Director of Communications at $200,000–$255,000 (San Francisco), Replit's Communications Lead at $230,000–$280,000 (Foster City), and Cloudflare's Senior Director, Executive Communications at $226,000–$310,000 (hybrid). If you're willing to sit in a hub, the money is there. This post is about the ones who aren't.
Most of these companies also post marketing manager roles and social media and content positions on the same boards, which matters if your background is closer to brand than to media relations. The remote job boards worth using will surface the same employers; the Clause Check is what the boards won't do for you.
The Remote Pitch Problem: Why Relationships Are the Job
Here's the part of remote PR that the "can you work remotely in public relations?" question is really asking about, and it's worth being honest.
The United States now has about 6.4 public relations professionals for every working journalist, by Everything-PR's 2026 count built from BLS occupational totals (315,900 specialists plus 83,200 managers against roughly 49,300 reporters). Cision's 2026 State of the Media report, a survey of 1,899 journalists fielded in January and February 2026, found that most receive 50 or more pitches a week and 72% say fewer than a quarter of them are relevant; 82% say a mismatch with their audience is a major reason to reject a pitch; 53% object to receiving AI-generated pitches. Muck Rack's 2026 State of Journalism survey (897 journalists in the final analysis) found that 88% immediately disregard pitches that miss their beat, while 86% say at least some of their stories originate from PR.
That's the causal chain a remote PR hire lives inside. The newsroom is shrinking, the inbox is flooded, and the reporter's filter is relevance to their beat. Remote work removes the one thing that used to shortcut that filter, the lunch. So what an employer is buying when they hire a remote PR professional is the beat list and the relevance discipline that person already has. Our postings say so: 46% (n=41 of 90) named media relations, 37% (n=33 of 90) mentioned journalists or reporters, and 36% (n=32 of 90) named a media database by brand. Twenty-one of 90 named crisis work, and 21 named executive communications.
Practically, that changes the interview. "Strong media relationships" is a phrase; a list of your last twelve placements with the reporter, the beat, and why each one landed is evidence. The candidates who get remote in-house offers walk in with the list.
And on the AI question that Google keeps surfacing next to this keyword: Muck Rack's 2026 State of AI in PR survey of 564 practitioners, summarized by PRSA, found that 76% use generative AI and 98% always or often edit what it produces. The tool is in the workflow. The reporter, per Cision, still objects to receiving its unedited output. A remote PR job that pays $150K is not a PR job with a remote checkbox. It's an in-house communications job at a company that stopped renting offices, and it was bought for the relationships you'll bring with you.
How to Land a Remote PR Role (and Get In-House Money)
Five moves, in order. Each one is a filter that makes the next one cheaper.
- Run the Clause Check before you spend a minute on the application. State clause, surge clause, pay-zone clause. If the state clause excludes you, close the tab. If the surge clause says days per week, decide now whether you'd relocate for the hub salary, because that's the job.
- Target the pay-transparency states and the top band. Paycor's tracker lists California, Colorado, Connecticut, DC, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, and Washington as states requiring ranges in postings, and notes that California's and Washington's laws explicitly cover jobs that can be done remotely. Multi-state remote postings typically carry the range for the highest-cost jurisdiction where the role could be filled, which is why 34 of the 90 postings with body text in our pull included a pay-transparency paragraph. Read the band for your state, then anchor at the top of it.
- Translate your agency title before you apply. A Senior Account Executive or Account Manager with five years is an in-house Communications Manager or PR Manager. Price the move to the BLS Managers occupation, where the 25th percentile is $106,580 and the median $146,910, not to Payscale's $81,637. The in-house postings in our pull back that up; Twilio's Principal PR Manager opens at $141,520.
- Decide on the APR with clear eyes. PRSA's Accreditation in Public Relations costs $385 or $410 for members and $745 for non-members, takes most candidates six to twelve months, involves a Panel Presentation and a computer-based exam across six areas, and renews every three years with 15 continuing-education units. It's a real credential, especially in public-sector and nonprofit communications. It is not a remote lever: zero of the 90 postings with body text mentioned it, and PRSA doesn't publish a pass rate. Get it for the discipline or the sector, not for the job board.
- Apply in volume to the ones that pass. Ninety-five unique roles across 55 employers is a thin market, and the remote-first employers refill the same titles every quarter. Set up auto-apply against the employers in the table above, keep your placements list current, and let the tool handle the ninety postings so you can spend your hours on the ten. Our guide on why you're not getting interviews covers the resume side; how to follow up on an application covers the week after.
"Which states can this role be hired in today?" and "How many in-person days or surges did this team actually do in the last two quarters?" The first tells you whether the state clause is stable. The second tells you whether the surge clause is real or aspirational. Both are answerable in one sentence by any hiring manager, and the hesitation before the answer is data.
If your writing and communication samples are already strong, the remaining work is throughput.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you actually work remotely in public relations, or is every "remote" PR posting hybrid in disguise?
You can, but the odds depend on which side of the industry you're on. In our September 2026 pull, 16% (n=10 of 64) of in-house PR and communications postings were verifiably remote by body text, and 42% (n=13 of 31) of agency postings were. Four of the fifteen in-house postings flagged remote were contradicted by their own text (Lambda's four days a week, OpenAI's DC-based roles, SpaceX's "will not be considered"), and Bospar's all-virtual roles were flagged not remote. Read the clauses, not the checkbox.
I'm a senior account executive at an agency making $80K. How do I move in-house and remote, and what should I ask for?
Translate the title first: five years as an SAE or Account Manager maps to Communications Manager or PR Manager in-house. Price it to the BLS Public Relations Managers occupation ($106,580 at the 25th percentile, $146,910 median), not to agency comps. Then apply only to postings that pass the Clause Check, in volume. For a concrete anchor, Twilio's remote Principal PR Manager posted $141,520–$176,900 and Affirm's remote-first Senior Manager, Financial Communications posted $164,000–$224,000 outside its top-metro band.
Why does a remote PR posting list 16 specific states, and can I apply from one that isn't listed?
The list is where the employer is registered to run payroll. One remote employee in a new state creates tax nexus there, which means registering with that state's revenue and labor departments and paying unemployment insurance in it. Method Communications names sixteen states, Fivetran posted for six, and Airbnb requires "a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity." If you're not in one of them, you're not a candidate for that posting, and offering to relocate later rarely helps because the offer letter needs a work state on day one.
What does a Clause Check score of 5 mean for my job search?
It means the role is genuinely remote inside a named list of states, and there may be a surge clause on top. Coinbase's Remote-USA communications roles are the model: remote-first, with quarterly in-person "surges." A 5 is a real remote job for anyone in an eligible state who can travel a few times a year. It is not a job for someone in an unlisted state, and it's not a 0–3 hub role wearing a flag.
Why does Payscale say PR managers make $82K when BLS says $147K?
Because the same title describes three different jobs. Payscale's $81,637 comes from 589 self-reported "PR Manager" profiles, weighted toward agency account managers and small-company generalists. BLS's $146,910 median is for the Public Relations Managers occupation, people who run a function, which matches in-house scope. Robert Half's 2026 guide adds a third number, a $77,750–$105,000 starting range for a Communications Manager. Pick the figure that matches the scope of the seat you're pricing.
Is the APR worth getting for a remote PR job?
Not as a remote lever. Zero of the 90 postings with body text in our pull mentioned APR or accreditation. It costs $385 or $410 for PRSA members and $745 for non-members, takes most candidates six to twelve months, and renews every three years with 15 CEUs. It's worth it in public-sector, nonprofit, and agency environments that value the credential, and for the Panel Presentation discipline itself. It won't move a tech company's comms hiring manager.
Is PR being replaced by AI, and should I still go remote in it?
The tool is in the workflow; the job isn't gone. Muck Rack's 2026 State of AI in PR survey (n=564) found 76% of PR professionals use generative AI and 98% always or often edit its output. On the other side of the inbox, Cision's 2026 survey of 1,899 journalists found 53% object to AI-generated pitches. The work that's hardening, not softening, is relevance and relationships, which is exactly what a remote hire is bought for.
What remote PR job pays the most?
Among verified remote postings in our pull, Twilio's CEO Communications Director at $171,120–$213,900 and Affirm's Senior Manager, Financial Communications at up to $245,000. MongoDB's fully remote VP of Global Communications didn't post a range. The BLS 90th percentile for Public Relations Managers is $284,990. The $290,000-plus postings we found (OpenAI, Freshworks) were hub jobs in the Bay Area, not remote ones.
Are there entry-level remote public relations jobs?
At independent agencies, yes, and they pay $47,000 to $76,000: Method Communications' Account Executive is remote in sixteen states at $58,000–$76,000, while Highwire's AE rungs are hybrid. In-house, the only associate-level postings we found were hub-based (Shield AI in DC, Helion in Seattle). The remote seats that pay in-house money are mid-career seats.
Start Your Remote Public Relations Job Search
The market for remote public relations jobs is thin, split, and legible if you read the body text. Ten remote in-house seats across 43 employers, thirteen remote agency seats across eight, and a $90,000 gap between the two columns that comes from the employer's business model, not your résumé. Run the Clause Check on every posting, price yourself to the BLS occupation that matches the scope of the seat, and put your auto-apply volume behind the employers that hire remote by default. The $100K-plus remote listings, our remote communications jobs guide for the wider comms market, the high-paying remote jobs guide, and the remote job boards that are worth your time are the next stops.
The journalist doesn't know where you're sitting. The payroll department does. The remote PR job that pays is the one where the second fact was settled before you applied.
