Remote Controller Jobs: What the Market Pays in 2026

You signed off the close at 7:40 on a Tuesday night. Twelve entities consolidated, the auditors' PBC list finally cleared, and the CFO's deck went out without a single restated number. Then you opened LinkedIn, saw "4,000+ remote controller jobs," applied to eleven of them over the next hour, and heard nothing back from any of them.

That number is not a lie. It is an answer to a question you did not ask. It counts plant controllers in Huntsville who will never work from home, fund controllers in Mumbai and Krakow, and hourly interim engagements filed beside salaried corporate seats. Strip those out and what remains is small, senior, and concentrated in a handful of software companies and outsourced accounting firms — a market you can actually work through in a weekend once you know its shape.

We read 44,321 live postings across 2,247 public company job boards on September 19, 2026, then queried 61 Workday career sites on top of that. Across all of them we found 25 US controller postings. Five were verifiably remote. This post covers what those seats pay, why the aggregate counts are inflated by three specific distortions, and how to score a posting before you spend an evening on it.

💡What the Data Shows: Remote Controller Hiring in 2026

Based on our sweep of 2,308 company job boards (44,321 live postings enumerated plus 61 Workday sites queried by keyword, September 19, 2026):

  • 25 of 81 US accounting-leadership postings carried a controller title
  • 5 of 25 US controller postings (20%) were verifiably remote in the posting body
  • 16 of 25 (64%) were onsite, most anchored to a plant, site, or named metro office
  • 44 of 69 controller-titled postings in the dataset (64%) sat outside the United States
  • 14 of 25 US controller postings (56%) disclosed a salary range, with a median posted band of $172,500-$260,000
  • 21 of 81 US accounting-leadership postings (26%) were remote — and the share rises as the title gets more junior
  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 median for treasurers and controllers is $166,570, with 74,600 openings projected between 2024 and 2034

What a Remote Controller Job Actually Is

"Controller" is six different jobs wearing one title, and only two of them are structurally capable of being remote. Every inflated job count you have ever seen starts here, because aggregators match the word and stop.

SeatWhat you ownRemote-capable?Why
Corporate controllerConsolidated close, GAAP and SEC reporting, auditSometimesDepends on the ERP and the audit posture, not the work itself
Assistant controllerClose execution, technical memos, team leadershipOftenLeast physically tied rung on the ladder
Divisional controllerOne business unit's P&LRarelyTravel and business-unit leadership presence
Plant / site controllerInventory, cost accounting, facility closeEffectively neverThe asset is physical and so is the count
Technical accounting leadRevenue recognition, SEC reporting, memosUsuallyDocument-and-judgment work with no physical dependency
Fractional / outsourced controllerA book of client companiesBy designBuilt to be delivered across clients, not inside one

That last column is the whole search strategy. A posting's remote-eligibility is decided by what the seat is attached to, not by how progressive the company sounds. So score the attachment.

The Controller Anchor Test: a 10-point rubric for scoring how physically anchored a controller seat is, and therefore whether the word "remote" survives contact with the offer stage.

0-3 — Asset-Anchored ($111K-$175K). Inventory, work-in-process, or cost accounting sits in scope. A plant, warehouse, clinic, or store appears in the reporting line. The posting uses shift language. Remote will not survive the offer, and pushing on it marks you as someone who did not read the job.

4-7 — Metro-Anchored ($152K-$269K). Consolidated close, but the posting names one city or three, describes an in-person audit cadence, or buries a day count in the body. Expect two to three office days regardless of what the headline says.

8-10 — Ledger-Anchored ($185K-$295K). Cloud ERP, no physical inventory, explicit remote-first language in the body, an #LI-Remote tag, or a client-portfolio delivery model. The work is documents and judgment. Location is incidental to both.

How to use it: score the posting before you apply, not after the recruiter screen. Anything below a 4 is a commute you have not agreed to yet.

The test does real work later in this post — it explains the salary spread, it sorts the five genuinely remote seats we found, and it is the fastest filter you can run on a job board you do not trust. Speaking of which, most remote finance roles get filtered the same way.

How We Collected This Data

The expensive part of this was not the querying. It was refusing to trust the remote flags, which meant reading bodies one at a time until the count stopped moving.

The figures come from a sweep run on September 19, 2026. We queried 1,668 company tokens against four public, no-authentication applicant tracking system APIs — Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, and SmartRecruiters. 2,194 boards responded with 43,948 live postings. A second pass added 61 Workday career sites, and a third covered BambooHR, Recruitee, and the Workable widget for another 53 boards and 373 postings.

We title-matched on controller, controllership, and comptroller for the headline count, then ran a wider accounting-leadership net covering chief accounting officer, accounting manager, director of accounting, and technical accounting to map the career ladder. We hand-excluded the non-finance senses of the word: air traffic, flight, mission, memory verification, quality, motor and servo, stores-shift, and one genuine "Space Vehicle Controller."

Work model was classified by reading the posting body, never the ATS remote flag, which lies in both directions. Every remote-flagged posting was hand-audited, and one was rejected outright for containing no remote, hybrid, office, or onsite language anywhere in its 5,700 characters. Salary figures were cross-referenced against O*NET's 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage series and the Robert Half 2026 Salary Guide.

⚠️What This Dataset Cannot See

The third pass was supposed to fix the mid-market blind spot and it failed: 1,668 tokens against BambooHR, Recruitee, and Workable returned 53 boards. Private mid-market and private-equity-backed companies — where a large share of US controller seats actually sit — run iCIMS, ADP, Paycom, or UKG, none of which publish an open endpoint. So the count skews toward technology, large-cap, and Workday-enterprise employers. Treat 25 US controller postings as a floor, not a census.

Two sources we could not reach are worth naming, because their numbers circulate anyway: Reddit is blocked to automated access entirely, so no sentiment claim in this post comes from it, and Glassdoor and ZipRecruiter return 403 errors, so their figures appear here only as the search-result title tags they publish. FlexJobs timed out.

What Remote Controller Jobs Pay

Posted ranges for controller-titled seats run higher than the national salary guides, and the reason is structural rather than flattering: the remote seats that exist are senior, and they cluster in software companies operating in pay-transparency states.

Salary ranges above derive from the 81 US accounting-leadership postings in our September 19, 2026 sweep, 41 of which disclosed a compensation range. Figures are posted base bands, not total compensation, and they were cross-referenced against O*NET's 2025 BLS wage data and Robert Half's 2026 guide. Ranges move as markets move — check the linked sources for current numbers.

Named examples, all posted publicly: Customer.io listed a Global Controller at $250,000-$280,000. LaunchDarkly listed a Senior Director, Assistant Controller at $214,800-$295,350. Affirm listed a bank accounting controller at $185,000-$245,000. One rung down, OpenAI posted a technical accounting lead at $216,000-$240,000 and Snowflake posted a general ledger accounting manager at $136,000-$178,500.

Now compare that to what the national sources say:

SourceRoleRange
Robert Half 2026 Salary GuideCorporate controller$152,000-$213,250 (midpoint $185,000)
Robert Half 2026 Salary GuideAssistant controller$94,000-$142,000
Robert Half 2026 Salary GuidePlant controller$111,000-$136,000
O*NET / BLS 2025Treasurers and controllers (median)$166,570
Our sweep, September 2026US controller postings (median band)$172,500-$260,000

According to Robert Half's 2026 corporate controller salary data, the national range runs $152,000 to $213,250 with a midpoint of $185,000 — built from placements the firm actually made plus third-party posting data. According to O*NET's occupational profile for treasurers and controllers, which republishes the BLS wage series, the 2025 median is $166,570 with 74,600 openings projected through 2034.

Our band sits above both, and the gap is not a contradiction. Public ATS boards over-represent software and large-cap employers in states with pay-transparency laws, which pushes posted numbers up. The national guides include the private mid-market, where plant and divisional controllers cluster at $111,000-$176,250. Both numbers are correct about different markets, and which one applies to you depends entirely on where your seat sits on the Anchor Test.

That distinction is not cosmetic. A plant controller is not a finance job that happens to be onsite. It is an onsite job that happens to be finance. The inventory count, the work-in-process reconciliation, and the physical close calendar are the job — and they are why a seat scoring 0-3 pays $60,000 less at the ceiling than one scoring 8-10 doing arguably less operationally complex work.

Why the Job Boards Say 4,000 and the Staffing Firms Say 7

Here is the spread that should reorganize your search. These are the numbers each source publishes for the same keyword on the same day.

Three orders of magnitude between the top and the bottom. The gap is not sloppiness. It is three specific distortions, and each one tells you where not to spend your evenings.

Distortion one is the plant problem. PPG posts plant controllers at its Oak Creek and Huntsville facilities with a work model listed as "On-Site/Flex Friday." Abbott posts a Site Controller in Minnesota at $129,300-$258,700 and an operations finance controller in Irvine at $130,700-$261,300. Caterpillar posts "Stores Controller - 3rd Shift" in Lafayette, Indiana. These are real controller jobs with real budgets, and none of them will ever be remote, because cost accounting against physical inventory requires proximity to the inventory. They inflate every aggregate count by a wide margin.

Distortion two is the offshore problem. 44 of the 69 controller-titled postings in our dataset sat outside the United States: Citi in Mumbai and Warsaw, State Street in Tokyo, Bangalore, and Krakow, Wise in London and Budapest, PPG in Brno, Adyen in Amsterdam, SumUp in São Paulo and Sofia. European and APAC finance operations use "controller" as a standard operational title where US companies would say "accounting manager" or "FP&A." A global aggregator count inherits that vocabulary difference and presents it to an American job seeker as domestic inventory. The controller title is the most offshored seat in American accounting, and the US remote count inherits that distortion.

Distortion three is the interim problem. Robert Half's own remote controller job board returns seven results. Five of the seven are hourly contract engagements at $55 to $90 per hour. All seven carry a specific city — Dayton, New York, Richmond, Foster City, Lansing, Amarillo, Cardiff-by-the-Sea. The same firm's salary guide puts a corporate controller midpoint at $185,000. The guide describes the permanent market. The remote filter surfaces the interim one. Both are published by the same company, and nothing on either page tells you they are answering different questions.

⚠️The Uncomfortable Truth

The aggregator number is not lying to you. It is answering a question you did not ask — "how many postings contain the word controller?" rather than "how many salaried US controller seats can I hold from my kitchen?" Those two questions differ by roughly 800 times.

Where the Genuinely Remote Controller Seats Are

Five verified seats came out of 44,321 enumerated postings. They fall into recognizable patterns, and the patterns are more useful than the listings, which will be filled by the time you read this.

Pattern one — remote-first software companies. All five verified remote US controller postings were at software firms: Affirm, Coinbase, Customer.io, Demandbase, and LaunchDarkly. The bodies say it outright — "Affirm is proud to be a remote-first company," "Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company." The causal reason is mechanical, not cultural: no physical inventory to count, cloud ERP accessible from anywhere, and a close process that already runs across time zones because the engineering org does. These score 8-10 on the Anchor Test almost by default.

Read those five titles again, though, because there is something uncomfortable in them. Customer.io's Global Controller is the only top-of-house seat in the group. Affirm's is a bank-subsidiary controller, Coinbase's is a business controller, and both Demandbase and LaunchDarkly posted assistant controllers. Four of the five verifiably remote US controller seats we found were deputy or specialist roles, not the seat that signs off the consolidated close. That is worth planning around rather than being disappointed by: the remote door opens one rung below the title you want, and it opens there first.

The second pattern is the one most controllers dismiss too early, usually because the title sounds like a demotion.

Pattern two — outsourced and fractional accounting firms. Supporting Strategies, which delivers outsourced accounting to small businesses, posts 6 of its 16 openings to "United States" with no city attached — including a controller-level Client Portfolio Manager and two Manager, Remote Accounting Services seats. The delivery model is a book of clients rather than a single employer's ledger, which is precisely what makes it location-independent. The work is controllership; the org chart just looks different. If that structure appeals, fractional CFO opportunities run on the same logic one rung up.

Pattern three is a sideways move that outperforms a vertical one. Technical accounting seats — revenue recognition, SEC reporting, technical memos — had the highest remote share in our dataset and paid competitively with controller roles: OpenAI at $216,000-$240,000, Lambda at $169,000-$225,000, Doximity at $154,400-$206,667, Airwallex at $140,000-$230,000. The work is research and documentation. There is nothing to be physically present for, which is exactly why these postings score 8-10. If you have SEC reporting experience, this is the shortest path to a remote seat at controller-adjacent pay.

Pattern four is interim work, used deliberately. A $75-per-hour contract annualizes to roughly $150,000 at full utilization, which sits inside the salaried band. It also gets you four or five companies on your resume in the time a permanent search takes, which matters if your current seat is asset-anchored and you need to demonstrate you can close books you have never physically visited. The honest downside: no equity, no benefits, lumpy income, and a January that can be very quiet.

Pattern five is the one that reorganizes the search. All five verified postings sat on five different company ATS boards — Greenhouse, Ashby, and Workday instances belonging to five unrelated employers. Every remote controller seat we verified sat on a company's own ATS board, and not one of them was findable from the aggregator count people start their search with. That is not a failure of the aggregators. It is how their indexing works, and it is why the count and the reality diverge so sharply.

How to Run the Search Without Burning a Quarter

Start by sorting yourself, because the two starting positions call for different moves. If your current seat scores 0-3 on the Anchor Test — plant, site, divisional, anything with inventory in scope — your first move is industry, not work model: get into software, services, or outsourced accounting at your current title, then go remote from inside. If you are already at 4-10 — corporate, assistant, or technical accounting at a company with no physical inventory — skip that step and go straight to the tactics below, because your constraint is search volume rather than industry.

Five tactics, each one falling directly out of the data above rather than out of general job-search advice.

Search the rung below the one you want. 13 of 48 accounting manager postings were remote (27%) against 4 of 17 controller postings (24%), and the absolute numbers matter more than the percentages — there were simply three times as many seats. A remote senior accounting manager role at a software company is a faster route to a remote controller seat than waiting for a remote controller seat to open, because you will be internal when it does. Filter accounting positions hiring remotely one level down from your title.

Read the body, not the badge. One of six remote-flagged controller postings in our sweep had no remote language anywhere in its 5,700-character description. Another said the role "can be done remotely for the right candidate" while also stating that staff "typically work three days per week at a hub location." Search the posting text for #LI-Remote, "remote-first," and any number followed by "days" before you invest an hour in an application.

Four Red Flags in a Posting That Says Remote

Inventory, plant, or site close anywhere in the responsibilities — the recruiter will walk the remote back on the screening call. "Remote-first, but not remote-only," which Coinbase states plainly and most companies do not. A remote badge with no remote language in the body at all, which described one of the six flagged postings we audited. And the tell that catches the most people: a posting that says the role "can be done remotely for the right candidate" while also mentioning a hub location and a day count, which is how Trulioo's corporate controller posting reads. That phrasing means remote is a negotiation you have not won yet, not a policy.

Treat the CPA as a rung-specific filter, not a universal one. O*NET reports that 48% of surveyed respondents say a bachelor's degree is required for treasurer and controller roles and another 48% say a master's is. In practice the CPA functions as a hard gate at the corporate controller rung, where auditors and the board expect it, and as a nice-to-have below it. If you are targeting accounting manager or technical accounting seats, CPA-credentialed roles are a subset of your market, not the whole of it. Cloud ERP fluency does more for a remote application than the credential does — NetSuite and cloud ERP skills show up in remote postings far more often than they do in plant-anchored ones, for obvious reasons.

Apply on company boards, not aggregate feeds. This is the tactic that follows from pattern five, and it is also the one people abandon fastest, because it means checking forty career pages a week by hand while running a close. That volume problem is what auto-apply exists to solve — monitoring company ATS boards directly and submitting on your behalf, so the five seats that matter reach you instead of the four thousand that do not.

Plan for the close calendar. Interview loops for controller seats run five to seven rounds and almost always include a technical accounting case. If your loop lands in the first week of the month, you will be prepping for it at 11pm after the close, and the case will be graded as though you had a free weekend. Push the panel round to the second or third week when you have any say in the scheduling. Recruiters accommodate this more often than candidates expect, because hiring managers in accounting know exactly why you are asking.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm an assistant controller at a manufacturer — can I actually go fully remote?

Not in the same industry, in most cases. Manufacturing controllership scored 0-3 on the Anchor Test across every posting we reviewed, because inventory and cost accounting require site presence. The realistic move is lateral into software or services first — even at the same title — and then remote from there. 5 of 25 US controller postings in our September 2026 sweep were verifiably remote, and all five were at software companies.

Why do LinkedIn and Glassdoor show thousands of remote controller jobs when I can't find any?

Three distortions stack. Plant, site, and divisional controller seats that can never be remote are counted anyway. 44 of 69 controller-titled postings in our dataset sat outside the United States, mostly in European and APAC finance operations that use the title more broadly. And hourly interim engagements are filed under the same keyword as salaried seats. The aggregators are counting the word, not the job.

How do I score a posting on The Controller Anchor Test?

Read the responsibilities section and look for physical dependencies. Inventory, work-in-process, cost accounting, or a named facility puts the posting at 0-3. A named city or an in-person audit cadence puts it at 4-7. Cloud ERP, no physical inventory, and explicit remote-first language in the body puts it at 8-10. Score before applying, and treat anything under 4 as an onsite role that has not admitted it yet.

Is a fractional or outsourced controller role a step down from a corporate controller seat?

In title, sometimes. In scope, rarely — you are running the close for several companies instead of one, which is broader technical exposure than a single-entity seat provides. Supporting Strategies posted 6 of its 16 openings as US-wide remote, including controller-level work, which is a better remote hit rate than any single corporate employer in our dataset. The real tradeoff is equity and long-term ownership, not seniority.

Do I need a CPA to get a remote controller job?

At the corporate controller rung, effectively yes — auditors and boards expect it. Below that, it is a differentiator rather than a gate. O*NET reports a roughly even split among respondents between bachelor's-required (48%) and master's-required (48%) for treasurer and controller roles, and none of that survey speaks to licensure specifically. Cloud ERP experience moves a remote application further than the letters do.

Should I take an interim remote controller contract at $75 an hour or hold out for a salaried seat?

Take it if your current seat is asset-anchored. $75 an hour annualizes near $150,000 at full utilization, which lands inside the salaried band, and it puts several companies on your resume in the time one permanent search takes. That portfolio is the evidence a hiring manager needs that you can close books remotely. Hold out only if you already have remote controllership on your record and need the equity.

What do remote controller jobs actually pay in 2026?

14 of 25 US controller postings (56%) in our sweep disclosed a range, with a median posted band of $172,500-$260,000. The floor we saw was $129,300 at Abbott and the ceiling was $295,350 at LaunchDarkly. That sits above the Robert Half 2026 guide range of $152,000-$213,250, because public ATS boards over-represent software employers in pay-transparency states.

Is technical accounting a better remote bet than controllership?

For getting remote quickly, yes. Technical accounting and SEC reporting seats had the highest remote share on the ladder and paid $140,000-$240,000 in posted ranges — OpenAI at $216,000-$240,000, Airwallex at $140,000-$230,000. The work is research and documentation with no physical dependency, so it scores 8-10 on the Anchor Test almost automatically. The tradeoff is narrower people-management scope if your long-term target is CAO.

The remote controller market is smaller than the counts suggest and better paid than the guides suggest, and both facts point the same direction: fewer applications, aimed far more precisely. Score every posting on the Anchor Test, search one rung below your title, and go to company boards directly instead of the feeds that aggregate them.

For the wider picture, our guide to the broader remote finance job market maps adjacent functions, fractional CFO opportunities covers the portfolio path, and roles in the $150K-plus band show where controller pay sits among senior remote work. If you are targeting a specific title, remote controller openings and financial analyst roles are both worth a standing search.

The close doesn't care what city you're in. Most controller job postings still do — and the five that don't are worth more of your evening than the four thousand that do.
